Compare the MEERKAT was used for the fist time tonight with a group of friends from my last employment.
Used it very many times for the CEEnema TEEkets but never for food before.
As a group of four with drinks starters and mains we saved almost £44 at Chiquitos

For some reason a blast from the past came to mind tonight. Maybe a crappy tv advert subliminal message  {-)

Anyway it prompted me to Google Rutger Hauer. Not heard or seen of him for years. Apparently he passed away aged 75
R.I.P.

The images of him through the ages really bring home the transformation of ageing  :((

Retirement is fantastic despite having to juggle my pocket money to buy my wants

I've just had my free eye test for old gits and my prescription hasn't changed so I concluded my glasses may just be tired.
I don't want to pay high street prices for varifocals especially as mine are over £300 after discount and with mediocre lenses.

I've just placed an order with Glasses2You and chosen the most expensive lenses but with introductory 40% off only cost £122 by PayPal.

I'll report back when they arrive

Hi taranis I am on my second set of varifocals from Specsavers.  My original ones were very good although there is a little trapezium distortion.  It is not noticable in normal life but beware makig a row of stanchions.

My second set were again the dearest lenses but the trapezium distortion is more apparent, not much, but I revert to a set of bifocals and a magnifying headband now for small items.

Interested to know what your new glasses are like.

Regards

Yes, it will be interesting to see what the online ones are like.

However, when I have new glasses (Specsavers) the dispenser lines up the centre of my eyeball on the plain glass sample frames to ensure that the varifocal graduation matches my line of sight. It used to be done with a marker pen but they now use an iPad to take the measurements. Presumably that wasn't possible for your online order.

If the alignment is wrong then you can, for example, find yourself having to dip or raise your head when driving to keep everything in sharp focus.

That's interesting although I suppose is then down to you if the glasses are wrong!

Varifocals do seem to be a personal thing. I'm OK with the Specsavers top lenses but I know people who don't find them satisfactory. And of course many people can't cope with varifocals at all.

I hope you get a good result with yours, we will be interested to hear about it.

Hi Colin, I remember having the ipad measurements taken, what took the time was finding some frames I liked!  I wanted to avoid the all plastic frame with no separate bridge piece on the nose.
A good point about Specsavers is that you can pop in for a check of the frames and a bit of re-fitting.

Which poses the question, have my ears moved?

Fortunately I’ve worn the same frames for years made by Police
The ones I’ve chosen are the exact same dimensions so I know they will be ok

I fear the space between them has got less dense to a point where the few brain cells left rarely meet any more.  Just got a few left that are obsessed with bulding model boats.
However having read the article on dementia in Model Boats magazine I do not feel unhappy about this.

Colin, would MB magazine object to uploading this article onto this forum?  The survey in the article covered 1100 modellers, I think we could better that.

For those who have not read it Club Chairman were asked how many modellers did they know who had succumbed to dementia?   There should have been 40 to agree with statistics but he found only a very few.

Hope springs eternal!

Roy,

You would have to ask editor Martyn Chorlton. As the article is in this month's issue I doubt if he would want it circulated for a while yet but obviously there is no reason why it should not be discussed on here.

There we go

We want your glasses to be perfect, so please read the following information carefully and then we'll do the rest to ensure that you are delighted with your purchase.
We are sending you a pupillary distance ruler as used by Opticians in the post. This is a gift from us and yours to keep. It is easy to use and comes with some brief instruction.

Please provide us with a photograph of yourself wearing the ruler we have sent to you. Please closely follow the photograph hints and tips provided in the letter. It explains our requirements for the image we need to work from.

Many Thanks,

I'm one of those who can't get on with varifocals as I had to move my head up and down which was annoying and also found that when looking left and right to the edge of the frames things would go  slightly out of focus which when in the car for instance I also found annoying when reversing, so I gave up on them. They were from Specsavers. My wife has no problem with hers but she does go to a more expensive optician!

Fortunately I'm short sighted so don't need to wear my glasses for model building, DIY, using the tablet or PC etc.

I find a pair of large lens supermarket 2.5 reading glasses do the job for me.

On another aspect, on checking Martin Lewis's MSE site, I find that retired is not a good occupation for car insurance purposes and that I could halve my annual premium by becoming a Model Maker (OCCUPATION :- activity that you are engaged in.)  As this is my main activity I wonder if I should re define my status ? Or would I have to be gaining financial benefit from it to cut the mustard ? Anyone want to buy a couple of boats  ?? perhaps Ebay.

Well Baldrick, see if your new 2 1/2 x magnification bottle bottom lenses can read that  :P  if so, you could list your new Occupation as a Reader
