Looks smart Jim, but when are you going to go the whole hog and get a car - much warmer for old(ish) bones in the winter?  {-)
Cheers
Ralph

Ps we're on Skye at the moment. Some lovely driving roads here if people would only remember that passing places can be used to let faster people past and not just to avoid oncoming traffic.

Cheers Ralph, buy a cage? All men are born equal but some are strong enough to keep riding a bike in their 70s.  I've still got a few years before that stage.
Enjoy your time in Skye.

Not sure that it is about strength. Have you still got the same reflexes as when you were younger?  I doubt it which is why there is a high accident rate with born again bikers.

But young riders also have a high accident rate, mainly because they lack experience and think they're immortal.

Lack of reflexivity could well be counteracted by LOTS more experience.

I was the only non-biker where I last worked - they all had long lasting injuries and mild disabilities from their biking accidents.

North Wales attracts lots of bikers to it's rural roads every summer weekend.
The local newsfeed regularly reports "Bxxxx closed in both directions due to a road accident" and an hour later the feed reports " 49 year old biker with life changing injuries airlifted to Stoke" ( the regional trauma centre )

In the general population their are those who have a very high cognisance level also those who have less . For motorcyclists a high level is desirable ,unfortunately some are lacking in this department which has serious health implications for them. Even more of a concern is that some motorists are also low on the Beaufort scale and if one of the previous should encounter one of the latter it will no bode well.

I’ve been a motorcyclist most of my adult life, pushing 71 and only got a Honda CBR 250 now which I enjoy thrashing the nuts off it on the bush roads of ACT. But how about this excerpt from my Strava last year on my pushbike descending Col de Beloka in the Snowy Mountains. Next time I’ll break the ton  cos I braked once when I didn’t need to with hindsight.

I often frightened myself in hindsight descending at close to 60 mph in Lycra  %%
I certainly would not throw myself out of a car at that speed and when adding 19mm tyres and crap brakes to the mix it beggars belief and yet the feeling is fantastic  {-)

They say you lose 1mm of skin per 1mph at speeds over 30mph.       I'll stick to my car, thanks.   :-))

Most born again bikers have a high accident rate due to lack of up to date experience and riding a bike beyond their ability. They have to get a racing replica sports bike and ride it at high speed on winding roads  when their riding ability is for a scooter on suburban roads.I have been riding for around 35 to 40 years and ride well within my limits so ultra fast reflexes are not needed, my preference is for touring bikes where I can ride for 200 to 300 miles a day without tiring myself out. High speeds are not really possible as I will often be towing a small trailer.

Hi Andy, you’ve got to flirt with death to get close to life mate. Beloka is known as “the wall”. It’s defeated even pros on the climb. I’ve done it four times on Étape Australia never made it without getting off and pushing. First time on a recce it took me 51 minutes. Descent was payback while on a touring holiday in Snowy Mountains with my daughter. I was carrying luggage too! Overtook some cars.
The only time I’ve fallen off was the first time after I’d fitted clips and the second time I landed on the bit I hurt the first time. Exquisite agony.
Jerry.

Hi Jerry
Despite cycling the Sierra Nevada there are not so many hills long enough to reach ludicrous speed due to switchbacks and Spanish roads tend to be built to a steady gradient. Here in UK Edale has a very long downhill stretch where I was approaching 60MPH but was bottling it when a lady club mate shot past me  %% {-)  I then backed off as seeing her was a reality check  :o

On a closer topic
New maximum state pension apparently is £175.20 depending on your contributions. Currently protected by triple lock but this may change given the current situation and pensions may be degraded further :((   On the other hand so many pensioners have died there ought to be enough in the kitty, sad fact. The new rate equates to about £5hr on 35hr week or about half minimum living wage.

I'm nearly 67 now and have 4 motorbikes, including a trail/super-moto and a scooter. We've stopped going touring now (wife prefers the soft-top now). The Triumph Tiger 1050 is heavy when fully loaded with panniers, top box and tank bag so it probably will be the weight that stops me riding in the end. Few more years I hope though yet as the interest is still there.

I shall reduce the fleet over time but it's nice owning a bike even if it's not used much.

As for retirement it's so true what many say about how did they have the time to go to work!

I've just had to re negotiate with Virgin media.
They warned of my discounts coming to an end that would lead to an increase from £27 to £44

Meanwhile my loyalty discounts are being offered to new customers  >>:-( >>:-(  where is the loyalty in that?

I use Freesat which is FREE and we never wanted a landline but previously Virgin charged you more if you didnt keep the line.
I just renewed broadband without a phone for £25 for 12 months, how times change

Just back from a great experience for my step sons 39th. One of those places where you get 9 couses but each would fit on a postage stamp  >:-o

Anyway it all went well and I wasn't paying  {-)

We then moved on to a quiet hotel bar (extortionately expensive) wifey and daughter inlaw ordered champers, the waiter asked if Tatinger would do ?  %%

Tattinger chapagne is available in Sainsburys at £27 for 750 cl.  But the best lately has been the 2006 vintage.
 %% %% %% %%
I have tasted the very expensive ones though, would you believe a Nebukadnezzer at £2000 a bottle!  These pricey ones are quite different to what us hoy polloy are offered.

By the way Vintage just means that the vinyard has declared the grape harvest as very good,  There are almost equally good champagnes from non-vintage years.
Also when you see a strategically placed bottle of wine in a good film this has cost the grower of the grapes an arm and a leg to get it there!  Product Placement they call it.

The grower told me it cost £50K to get the bottle of red wine on the table of the dining car when Bond talks to Vesper in Casino Royale.  It was a very nice wine I tasted the years before and after and they were excellent. It put his wines on the map and was worth every penny!

You may well be right.  Prosecco is a much underated type of champagne made in the same way.  At the same price Prosecco is much better value for money as well.

They say that with Italian wine look at the label, the more writing there is the better!
I had some Montrachet (monrash a)  red wine from Morrisons a couple of years ago at £7 a bottle it was amazing, I went back and bought some more.

I do not know if she is still there but Morrison's wine buyer was well ahead of all the other supermarkets.  She was buying wine from producers before the International Wine Challenge competition (Feb each year) and she chose wines that later won awards awards and the price went up.

I can only say do not buy wine at less than £8 per bottle.  The reason is that at £4 you get 50p's worth of wine (the rest is tax and transport) and at £8 you get 8 times more value in the wine.  There is no such thing as Supermarkets slashing the price, whatever they have come down to was the intended price.
regards
Roy
