Hi Nick, when I was a lad in the CCF we had a i week camp at RAF Marham, they had Washingtons then (B29s) most of us had flights in them.  No H & S then.
Good luck

Glad you got a posting you can live with, so many don't. Pity about BBF but BZN is an easier commute I think. All the best to you.

A good few years ago I crossed the Atlantic in the back of a Hercules, going to Florida via an overnight at Gander (in February!).  Not an experience I would rush to repeat.  Fine cargo plane, crappy airliner.  :}

Glad to hear you have got something you like Nick. Yes, some experience with infernal consumption engines and whirligigs could come in useful in the future. Meanwhile you have your writing career to pursue as a sideline. Most Model Boats contributors tend to be on the wrong side of 60 so some younger blood willing to prepare articles is definitely a very good thing.Colin

My youngest daughter was in the Tower at Brize for 3 yrs or so, it's a HUGE place for a RAF station, but that's 'cos the USAF had it in the 50s and flew B-36s, B-47s and B-52 from there!

Enjoy Oxfordshire Nick.  :-)

Thanks everyone

I’m basically going from end of the spectrum to the other with regards to aircraft- fast jets to large transports. We now have all four painted Tornados ready for the final flypast, a 9 Sqn jet with a bat, a 31 Sqn jet with a gold star, a Marham 100 anniversary jet, and the GR1 commemoration jet in wrap around green and grey camouflage. With fingers crossed they might fly together next week for the first time but knowing our luck... {-)
The move to Brize will be odd as I’ve spent over 14 years at Marham and I’ve only ever spent time at another station for a short time as part of a detachment. I’ll have to get used to a completely different station- it makes me feel like a LAC again!

Nick,
Brize isn't too bad, lots to do on airfield and some quite decent pubs around.
Welcome to the depths of Oxfordshire and the M40 isn't that far away!!!

Oh and Nick if you get a jolly and fly down the Ogwen pass as they invariably do just give me a wave as you fly over Bethesda HA HA

Well we are in they final few flying days left of the RAF Tornado, there are probably less than 30 days left before the skies go quiet from the noise of RB199s.
Here is the practice pictures of the three newly painted end of era Tornados flying in formation together for the first time:

Do you know if any of them will be preserved?

I know there that 029 is at Duxford, about 10 went to DCAE Cosford for RAF training purposes and I’ve been told that the final few are going to some museums (don’t know which ones) and technical colleges. Some might become gate guardians but I know that the last few are being dismantled at Marham for road moves to their final destinations.

I live near Brize Norton so the Hercs (and others) fly over our house all the time. Good to know there's a conscientious modeller making sure nothing drops off and makes a hole in us!
