Request for help for gluing Letrapak placards
« on: February 07, 2019, 01:36:11 pm »

Dear friends, working on organizing my workshop I had to put placards on the covers for the small boxes in which I will store my surface mount resistances:

These Letrapak stuff, in this case the ones made using paper, have the tendency to unglue themselves. Specially as I will touch them while opening the covers to extract surface mount resistances in a 1206 package. Does anyone have a suggestion how to ensure those placards do not unglue?

First what is the materials i.e. styrene, abs , cardboard, pet, HDPE:-
1) of the placards / name tags
2) of the small boxes

Second what did you use initially for the adhesive, super glue, impact adhesive, poly cement etc.

Only reason why is once we know what has been used can we advise on what would be best to use.

Is it Letrapak (which does not bring up anything significant) or Letraset - a dry transfer sheet material, i.e. the letters on the pieces of card rub onto another surface giving a text on that surface - for instance, if I wanted to add the text EXIT in a particular Font and height size on say a electrical panel, I buy the font and it usually has several sizes of the alphabet on a sheet. The rub off part of the item is on the reverse of the sheet and it transfers when pressure applied to the front side, it takes great care to cover with a seal coat as usually it can melt the transfer.
Those that you have may have a gum that is similar to a postage stamp and will not really have a great deal of adhesion.

Others may have an idea what you are looking for.

if you have a printer, make your own labels and use them permanent label stock. this is what we used to put on car side windows for drivers who parked illegally outside our building. 1 it is waterproof, 2 its a bigger to get off, 3 once it's off you need to remove the residual glue with alcohol.

Living in Germany and searching in Amazon, I am not sure what the right permanen label stock is. Printing the text on the label using my inkjet printer would be great. Can you give me a link to an example, ideally Amazon or eBay so to know exactly what to buy. Thx

Hi Helmut, your best bet is to try a few printers. ask them if they have any larger sheets they could cut to a4. this stuff is extremely expensive.
this is a similar product
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019PYR2L6/ref=asc_df_B019PYR2L658403092/?tag=googshopuk-21&creative=22110&creativeASIN=B019PYR2L6&linkCode=df0&hvadid=221835211105&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=18295418362856964658&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006933&hvtargid=pla-421559783923&th=1&psc=1 at £55 a box of 50 sheets!
Also google Ultra permanent label stock. (still expensive!)

1st make sure that the box surface is properly clean.  Then reduce the label size so that it does not reach the edges, because that is where handling will start te dislodging process.  Then cover the label and box front with clear adhesive tape.
I marked up a light switch in a building where I worked in 1975 using that method (paoer stuck with Pritt, covered with Sellotape).  It was still there the last time I visited te building in 1989.
With the labels shown, a quick cut and peel top and bottom to give a gap between the information and edge, then armour it with clear tape.

I use the label machine type labels, and as long as they are stuck on a clean flat surface they seem ok.

@grendel. That is the DYMO I do own and with which I did print the labels. I have decided to use this glue:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01ANPDAAI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thx to everyone helping me. I assume I have now been able to make an educated decision. I also want to point out that I learned about those permanent labels. As you wroze, they are really expensive!

quick quote to enlarge the text

( I think I may have found a work around for this 'tiny text' issue, using the 'censored word list'  -  size= 2 px    now equals    size=14px, thus resizing the text!  )

Brilliant workaround Martin, thats real out of the box thinking. I just quoted it and edited the size comments out.

For what it's worth, in this instance my approach would be to use double-sided adhesive tape and maybe to cover the paper labels with clear tape to stop them from becoming dirty or scuffed. My own electric components are stored in multi-drawer cabinets and I made the labels using a Brother labelling machine like this one http://www.labelzone.co.uk/brother-pt-m95-handheld-label-printer/p17813
Works for me.
