Which Cyano? ( Glue choices )
« on: March 06, 2019, 06:01:20 pm »

Hi all - I need some advice please  :-))

Which would be the best cyano glue for me?  I don’t use it very often, but when I need it more often than not it’s gone off. I’ve tried the Admiral glues which work great but just don’t last long enough for me. I keep them in an air tight jar filled with rice but that doesn’t work either  {:-{   Any help would be much appreciated

Hi Mark - I use either Hafix or, more recently, gorilla cyano.
The gorilla glue was bought for me 15 months ago and is still going strong - in warmer weather I keep my cyano in the fridge  :-))

Hello Mark,
cyano only has a short shelf life about six months so don't buy it in huge volume, you need to keep in in the fridge helps to keep it longer. I buy mine from a local PVC  window replacement firm normally cheaper and made for pro's not like the crap you get in shops/supermarkets as that's made for Joe public.

Hi Ray / Howard

Thanks for the replies - I never knew about keeping it in the fridge so I’ll give that a go. I was thinking about just buying the cheapest little tubes that I could get?  What do you reckon?  I only really use it occasionally but it’s nice to have it there when you need it

My Dad and I tend to use the cyano used in the kitchen and bathroom industry by companies such as Wickes, and Howes. We’ve been using it for 15 years, none of our boats have fallen apart yet!

Hi Mark,
I've tended to use the wee tubes from pound shops over the last 20 years or so, nothing's given way so far and unopened tubes seem to keep ok.  These glues are really really runny so I put a drop on the end of a bit of wire and apply it that way cos it's very easy to get too much straight from the tube.

When I need a thicker glue for gap filling etc, mitre-bond types from builders merchants work well and usually come with a tin of accelerator.  I do have the shelf life problem with these but I do most of my building in the winter in a shed so they stay cold enough to last a building "season".

Must admit I was a fan of Zap cyno but cant seen to get hold of it only now on ebay so I started using Gorrilla Glue thats darned good stuff no problems as yet BUT as I needed quite a lot of it for a hull I am building I decided to try Mitre Bond, from Toolstation. You can buy this in a small pack or as I did a 50g one complete with accelerator my goodness what a strong bond no complaints as yet

What's the difference between Superglue and Mitre bond / adhesive / glue?

Martin, from what I can discover, superglue is the generic name for cyanoacrylate, whereas Mitre Bond is one of the brand names for it.

Others may know better.

Thanks for the advice I’m going to get the gorilla glue and give that a go. I’ll keep it in the fridge and see how long it lasts. If that doesn’t work for me I’ll get the cheap tubes from Poundland  :-))

Gorilla glue is a good one but the price against the amount is poor....for  2 packs of gorrilla glue i get 1 pack of mitre bond and 4 times the quantity of glue truly a no brainer to me personally....and lets face it a lot of builders kitchen fitters use it.I cut 2 pieces of wood end to end and the wood broke before the glue joint did.

Martin in answer to your question nowt really,if you spray the kicker onto one component and glue to the other the bond is nearly instantanious,if you dont use the kicker it is approx 10secs to being glued.......even quicker the glue myself to a hull i am building.

As for poundland glue....please don't swear on here

With regard to shelf life, how long on the shelf before purchase?

Yes Ned that must also come into it as I get mine from a local friend that has a window replacement firm for his fitters so know its fresh. but you have a good point.so could be in Asda, B&q  and other firms for months. they should have sell by dates on giving you at least six months. but that will never happen.

If stored in direct sunlight, hours of shelf life,

If stored in a warm place, days of shelf life,

If stored in a cool place, months of shelf life,

If stored in the fridge, many moths of shelf life,

If stored in the freezer.... dunno!

Remember, 'cyno'.....was developed to glue body parts together  O0

Other uses such as model & wood working are just secondary off shoots :-X

Warm, dry, cold, time of the day, week or month? ...don't tell me your problems

The carpenter who recently did some inside work in my house was using Mitre Bond and confirms everythiing that Dave says above. Not only is it very good, it is also very quick and time is money to a tradesman.

Ned.....this chap Coover may have worked for Kodak Eastmen, but at my time with the Department of Defence we were taught ......

courtesy of Wiki.......

While much attention was given to the glue's capacity to bond solid materials, Coover was also the first to recognize and patent cyanoacrylates as a tissue adhesive. First used in the Vietnam War to temporarily patch the internal organs of injured soldiers until conventional surgery could be performed, tissue adhesives are now used worldwide for a variety of sutureless surgical applications'

....so maybe a spin-off would have been correct.......Derek

About a year ago I was reading RCM&E (model flying magazine), and a modeller building large scale gliders was using a cyano called 'Liquid Weld', and swore by the stuff. I thought I would try it, a two year shelf life and industrial strength is claimed, and it is only available in the UK. Have to say it is excellent stuff and the best cyano I have used. I store it in the fridge, (strange look from SWMBO), and after a year it is still going strong. For applications which need a longer setting time I tend to use 'SLO-ZAP' by Zap, it is a thick CA which is slow cure, high strength, and gap filling, particularly useful if your carefully crafted joint isn't quite 100%. Neither of these products is cheap, but you do tend to get what you pay for. Personally I avoid cyano and epoxy from Poundland.

Just my ten penn'orth on the subject of 'stickum', as most modellers will have their own personal preferences.

hi all, im looking for a glue that will fix my painted window frames onto the painted surface of the main cabin on my tyne class lifeboat, from what i can read normal cyano will leave a bloom mark which i want to avoid, the low odor no or low bloom glues from the internet seem expensive with the postage, so are there alternatives.

Don't use  cyano. Use Canopy Glue, it's what it is intended for.

Cyano fumes can cause the fogging as well as the glue itself.

A google search brings up different suppliers, this one is typical.

would the canopy glue really be good enough, i expect these window frames will get wet quite a few times, ive used the stuff before on my static models but theyve never been subject to wet conditions

Once cured it should be fine. Probably best to check the specs of what you buy such as this one:

https://shop-4-glue.com/canopy-glue-clear-set-canopy-bond-model-kit-plane-boat-window-adhesive-clear-set-glazing-canopies-131-p.asp

Basically you only want splashproof.
