Oh God Martin, don't get me started!

Anything by Philip Dawson - Liner, Cruise Ships, British Superliners of the Sixties
Anything by D.K. Brown - The Grand Fleet, Warrior to Dreadnought etc etc
Oscar Parkes - British Battleships
John Bowen- Miniature Merchantmen parts 1 & 2
Shipping Wonders of the World - 4 volume set

I give up, I've got hundreds of books I refer to regularly, Naval, Merchant and Modelling....

For Scale Modern Warships:
Construction
Tim Morgan: Scale Model Warships, published by Traplet. Good for all warships, how to scratchbuild superstructure and follow plans.
Dave Wooley and William Clarke: Warships and Warship Modelling, published by Special Interest Model Books Hard book covering similar to above with colour pictures.
Richard Webb: Model Boats With Styrene, published by Traplet. General scale ship modeling but very relevent to warships.
Hugh Bright: The Complete Marine Radio Control Manual, published by Chatham Publishing. A very usefull for Radio Control and Electronics
To be continued.........................

The list is endless, but two good novels.....

"Riddle of the Sands", by Erskine Childers and "The Sand Pebbles", by Richard McKenna.

"SHIPPING OUT" by Gerry Evans. A merchant sailor's tale. Excellent read, covers period 1953 to 1961 out of Liverpool to all those exotic places. Made a man quite nostalgic. Published 2006 by Sarah Bennett Books, Wellington , NZ

Hows about 'Narrow Dog To Carcassonne' by Terry Darlington ?? True tale of a retired couple sailing their narrow boat across Channel down to the Med (complete with whipet dog of title).
Very funny book and stimulates my imagination into thinking what I'll be doing when I retire in about 27 years time.

Mogs

p.s I'm sure I read somewhere that they are making this into a film (probabaly being done by the lot who made Calender Girls or some other BritFlick). Should be good.

For a true life account of bravery and a unique history of the St Anne's-on-the-Sea Lifeboat Station 1881 to 1925, try "On a Broad Reach" by G I & J E Mayes published by Bernard McCall (contact publisher direct bmccall@globalnet.co.uk). Hardback A4 format, well illustrated at £12.50.

The book details the rescues carried out and the tragic loss of a lifeboat and crew as well as the struggle for improved equipment and facilities. I found it fascinating, inspiring and humbling.

If you want a "How to" book I recommend "Workshop Practise for Ship Modellers" by Brian King. Sensible, practical and well illustrated

Out sweeps!:     The story of the minesweepers in World War II by Paul Lund.

Read it on a holiday once. Lots of antidotes, lots of facts, very technical.

Great stuff!

Another of my favourites, one of Kipling's Victorian RN stories: "Their Lawful Occasions", about naval maneuvers on a torpedo boat.

General Naval Books:
DK Brown and George Moore: Rebuilding The Royal Navy. Chatham Publishing. This is an excellent book examining The Royal Navy and how it's ship design evolved up to the turn of the century. See the frontpiece of Manchester in rough weather.
John D Gresham and Ian Westwell: Seapower published by Grange Books. Brilliant pictures of modern US Navy. Great for carriers and Ticcos and Burkes
Steve Bush: British Warships and Auxiliaries published by Maritime Books. Once a year publication covering all vesals of The RNLt Cdr Ben Warlow RN: RN Frigates In Focus and RN Destroyers In Focus published byMaritime Books. Part of a series covering the subjects from WWII up to date, good B&W pics of ind ships.

I found a great bookshop in Plymouth in the Barbican area:

Rod's Books
27 Southside Street
Barbican
Plymouth
PL1 21D
01752 253546

It's about the size of a kitchen and has books piled to the ceiling. Mostly ships, reference and fiction. All second hand I think and full of bargains. He will do deals if you can see him over the pile of books on the counter. If you are in Plymouth go and look. He soes mail order so it's worth calling him for that rare publication you want.

A fascinating book is,

THE RULES OF THE GAME (Jutland and British Naval Command) by Andrew Gordon.
Published by John Murray (publishers) Ltd London. £30.00 (when I bought it)

A well written view on why the British acted as they did at Jutland and how senior officers had lost the independence of thought and action so encouraged by Nelson. This book is worth the money for the appendices alone!

Cheers
