Hi Ian

That is absolutely stunning, both in quality and interest. Thanks for sharing the film. I’ll be studying it in detail for some of my future work, I find it interesting in the way that the crews of different TBDs used different boilers for cruising up the canal as they definitely had steam coming from different funnels in the film.

Apparently, this is April 1901 and one of the vessels is HMS Gipsy. A little bit about the visit and career of the ship can be found here: http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/weapons_HMS_Gipsy_1897.html

Absolutely beautiful boats. None of the clinical, almost sterile, appearance of the recent past and present.
It's just a pity we can't get a scale black/brown smoke generator for the finishing touch %)

Amazing footage, only small warships but how menacing they looked.

The water coming from the side would almost certainly be the condenser discharge. You can see the same thing on the cargo ship - that was an interesting vessel too.

Cannot be played outside UK. Shame, it would be great to see it.
