whirlwind atlas and Olympic.....red drum winches
« on: April 08, 2019, 01:50:27 pm »

ok now had an Atlas and olympic winch. both had  problems. there is no info out there really about these servos. I have an advert and a lousy manual, which describes more about how to use them, than actually about them.
both had issues as stated. both had black lead rot,  both had continuous rotation, one had no reverse, and juddery operation.
after head scratching, asking questions and getting no answers, I finally bit the bullet and opened then up. new servo wires, clean all the gears, check the pots, cleaning them with electrical cleaner, soldering new leads and reflowing the solderjoints on the pcb and then, totop it all, changing the end points on the 2.4ghz tx, and I finally have 2 working servos!! anyone who wishes to donate anymore of these old red drum winches, I would be happy to accept them!!!  :D

They still command good prices Klunk,
Cutting edge for racing.
Powerful for the large yachts back in the day.
My Whirlwinds in my M's were spot on and I rescued one from the Black wire death as you have done.

Getting scarce now, and most are
probably suffering bw syndrome.
Keep hold of them, in Classic yachts
Worth more to you knowing they are
working than flogging them off.
