Brazing/silver soldering problems
« on: April 15, 2019, 10:15:59 am »

I've been using some 1.2mm dia soldering/brazing rods which I rescued from a shop closure in 1975. They came shrink-packed on a card under the GAZ brand, although that card was lost a long time ago. This wire is pretty hard and is excellent for hard-soldering K&S brass rod and also stainless steel M310 TIG welding rod of up to 2.4mm dia, with East Flow powder-mix flux.

My problem is that it's all been used now, and the silver solder I've bought to replace it just doesn't agree with these materials and/or my previous soldering technique. I am using a butane/propane Gaz TH2000 torch with a fine nozzle. Can anyone recommend a brand or type of solder wire and compatible flux for these jobs and which they have used, please?

Many thanks for your prompt reply, Mark. I've also had an E-Mail from an old friend/correspondent who recommended Cupalloy, so I'll fire off an E-Mail to them and see what's what.

I have tried silver soldering and I  will  admit I’m crap.... I have tried to watch and learn on the YouTube vids but I always go wrong

Thanks  :-))

Ned
Yeah - let's hope so, particularly now it's cost me over twenty quid to find out... This stuff is NOT cheap.  :o

Colin
What makes you think I'm going to be any good at it, especially with unfamilar materials?!  :embarrassed: If I get anywhere near good enough I'll have a think about it!
