nimhs and lipo and escs
« on: April 17, 2019, 12:14:11 pm »

ok, i know the difference performance wise, but why do most brushed esc's not deal with lipo batteries? whats the difference between the 2 battery power outputs? or is it and electrical thing within the esc??

Basically most brushed escs do not have the correct low voltage cut off for LiPos if they have one. Brushed escs will work perfectly well with LiPos but you can discharge them below their minimum which can cause problems with them being damaged or no longer able to take a full charge. NiMhs are not so sensitive to overdischarge and can be run near flat with little damage.
By using a low voltage alarm for LiPos that connects to their balance plug you can protect against overdischarge, these have either a loud buzzer, bright LEDs or both to warn you. There used to be a low voltage cut off unit that connected between the battery and esc but I have not seen one for some time, a friend had one fitted in a fast electric using LiPos.

An ESC doesn't care what source is power comes from, lipo, NiMH, on etc as long as they can supply the voltage and current.

Anyone who says otherwise is talking rubbish

Yep, as said above, most speed controls (probably all!) are fine as long as they get the correct voltage shoved up the right end, and you don't draw too much current for the controller. The only limitation is the lack of low voltage protection that prevents you from buggering up your LiPos if you over discharge them.
Treat them correctly and they will look after your needs!

Check out the Mtronicks tio range will run on lead acid nmh and lipo batteries. I think they a low voltage protection for lipo use.

Most current ESCs were designed before LiPo was common.  Many designed since just didn't bother on he assumption that users woul be happy to fit a separate warning device, making the extra cost optional.
Earlier batteries would signal approaching discharge by the universal indicator of the boat going slower.  LiPos will give full power until they drop, when its too late.

I run with a lipo low voltage buzzer anyway.  just curious if you run a lipo on a standard brushed esc would it damage it, as i had a brand new esc catch fire on Sunday while running a  new 7.4v 3000mah battery

Like the man said, volts is volts is volts to a speed controller. They ain't that clever, but they only tend to blow up if they're overloaded, wired up incorrectly or just plain faulty.

I think it was just faulty. am putting a new esc in and replacing the servo as that was not as well. this is what I call my nemesis boat. 1 blown motor, 1 blown esc, 1 receivee failure in the middle of the lake..., I outing where i hit a submerged branch and sank!
beginning to hate this boat, she could be at Wicksteed,  either for sale or on fire!

Since volts is volts, effectively the only difference is that LiPos are capable of delivering a devastating amount of current if the load demands it.  A mild fault might just sulk a bit on a battery that can't deliver, but let the magic smoke out if supplied by something that can, even if the supply voltage is near enough the same.  A broken ESC might do just that.
