As and when I get my kit I'll take steps to "future-proof" the design for anyone who wants one in the future. Ain't these 'pooters wunnerful?

That would be great  :-))

Loyalhanna dockyards in the US sells a 22” fg hull as a replacement for the Midwest hull. $85.00 USD. Not a 30” hull but probably would work okay.
I have the original but I don't like small models for sailing.

 :-)) Dave,
If you build a plug & pull hulls you may find a market here in the US. The only source for a LB hull I know of is Loyalhanna. Bluejacket sells a complete kit but it is quite pricey. These hulls are adaptable to building a bass boat or lobster yacht as well as the fishing version so they are at some level still popular.

I'm sorry to be a killjoy but there are plenty of reasons why this would be a non-starter - at least for me. My preferred medium is wood and not GRP, and I've long since left the commercial world for a quieter life! Besides which the cost of shipping 30" GRP hulls to the USA from UK would be truly astronomic. I'll leave it to Don at Loyalhanna to sort one out if he thinks a 30" version would be worth the trouble.

Andy
Maybe with a 50mm 3-blade plastic prop and a 2S LiPo? The orange 28mm Turnigy brushless motors fit straight into a 380/400 glass-nyolon motor mount - this one might do the same. It makes fitting the motor very easy.

Thanks Dave that's useful to know. I'm just looking at the old stuffing box as they refer to it.
4mm thread for prop and shaft turned down to not 3mm but 1/8th at drive end with an imperial grub screw on the collar  {-)
Prop tube is 5.6mm O.D.

I'm ordering a 3 to 3 coupling and looking at a better shaft to suit

EDIT microflex 3mm to 4mm plain coupling.

Model boat bits do prop tubes and shafts separately to optional lengths so I'm looking at possibly 11" tube and a 15" plain one end shaft that I can cut to length.
tube is 6.35mm O.D. but I'm sure I can modify to fit

Actually having looked at Stan's very useful pictures I think I might be better making the prop tube go right through the bulkhead to the cabin.

340mm is favourable

EDIT
I've just sent this to Steve

Hi Steve
Can you make me a 6.35mm O.D. prop tube 340mm long with an oiler point (20mm tall max) at 250mm.
A 4mm shaft threaded one end plain other end 365mm long
Accompanied by a micro flex coupling 3mm to 4mm

Andy....

1. is your plan a true 1:1 scale?
2. the Microflex coupling is listed as 45 mm long overall [-10 each end for engagement]
3. the propeller may have up to 10 mm for engagement

365 -10 for engagement in the propeller - 10+35 - 10 for  the coupling
:o  if so, won't a 356mm overall shaft will place the motor mounting face about 10>12 mm further inboard?

Thank you Derek
I’ve ordered the shaft longer to cut down as required. The further forward the motor the more room beneath to take a motor mount across the V of the hull  :-)

The cabin area is very large and should accommodate all the electronics needed for this model.

Ahah........sorry, I missed the shorten actual prop shaft ., 'cut to length to suit' :embarrassed:

I accept that cold drawn precision 4.0 mm stainless bar will be the nominated shafting, however do the Model Boat Bits manufactured shaft & outer shell construction include a mid position bearing?

The reason I ask.......if we bring this back to full size....a scale of 3/4" to the foot is a factor of 16

a 340 mm long outer shell with bearings is 344 x 16 = 5440 mm overall tube
the shaft of 4 mm is 4 x 16 = 64 mm diameter bar

Now I ask in full scale life, would we have a 64 mm diameter shaft, whipping around & unsupported [except at extremities] ...... over ~~ 5440 mm?  <*<

Good point but I don’t think 4mm will behave like a full scale shaft as centrifugal force will be nothing with barely any weight
I’m sure Steve’s shafts perform satisfactory

Order paid.
No there is no centre bearing, bronze bearings both ends. As I anticipated.
The original has no bearings at all and just has the tube crimped down to the shaft at the ends and no oiler. This has noticeable play and pretty poor for the 80's obviously to a price point.

I'm pretty sure I replaced the shaft and tube supplied with a M4 x 8mm one with bronze bearings, although it was the same length as the kit version. The Mabuchi 555 even on 14.4v is a low-revving motor anyway.

My kit arrived about twenty minutes ago - yippee!

My kit turned up today. I've had a quick look in the box. As mentioned above, the propshaft will need replacing with something better. Apart from that, everything looks good.

I do think it might be a little ambitious for my first build. Although I am probably capable of putting it all together (the instructions seem to be very comprehensive), it would be a shame to do a less than perfect job through inexperience, especially since there's no possibility of having another go later.

I've got an Aeronaut Mowe 2 kit that I picked up at a good price on eBay. I think it makes sense to build that first, use it as a cheap way to try out things like finishing with epoxy, glassing, etc., then come back to the lobster boat if the Mowe turns out OK.

Just wait until you turn 14+ :-))
Just take your time with it. No prizes for speed O0

I just got one of these for £10 delivered from a UK seller, don't know what I'll do with it but for £10 who cares  {-)

Could argue that the orange motor I linked to is maybe a better orientation (shaft and stator) than this option but I’ve used this mount from my bits drawer and drilled/taped it to suit. Now I need an ESC with reverse function.
Hobby king website is down just now and painfully slow to navigate when working  >:-o

Whilst my main project is stalled due to the weather preventing painting I've made a start.

I find the keel parts need some adjustment and perhaps some of the wood has shrunk but I've focused on making parts fit where they will meet other parts and not concerned with the outline of the keel.

Now awaiting custom prop tube

This will be evened out later

Been to Doncaster exhibition where I found this chap from mountfleet models.
He's now checking out the plans for his new home and advised me on materials at Leeds model shop :-)

Parts prepared up to step 19 page 15
It's a shame that midwest were not sympathetic to the grain for the deck for those using stain and varnish. They have cut all parts with ply one way up and the deck is either all lefts or all rights resulting in as pictured with one side flipped over.

As for sanding the edges square. If only it was that simple, all the mating edges are convexed so need trimming minimalistically. Steel rule used to make a clear sanding line

Andy,
Of course you can & should build the boat in any configuration you choose. Just a tip however....one would never see a lobster boat with varnished decks. The lobster yachts had a lot of bright work.

Yes I've read that Bill thanks however it does look nice. I'll have plenty of time to decide  :-))

My criticism is aimed at Midwest who picture their model such but then make it extremely difficult to achieve purely by thoughtlessness.

If I go that route I should be able to match the colour but not the different grains
