This is a lovely build and lovely kit too.  I cannot believe that its no longer manufactured its such a shame for our hobby.  As for the deck get some maple on it - it'll look amazing  :-))

Thanks and I completely agree
Sounds good do you have a brand in mind and is it acrylic or solvent based?

P.S the more advanced modeller could make this from plan. I believe some Kirklees club members are doing this

Just my two cents worth...lobster boats of this era had painted decks. No time to maintain a varnished deck. Pulling & resetting traps is a messy business.

Hi Andy I meant real maple not a stain or paint mate.  Some thin planks would bend very easily to make the shape of the deck and quick line of archival ink down the side of the plank to simulate the caulking would look great

I would spend time on the deck as its such a prominent part of the boat  :-))

It wouldn't be varnished Bill not in the way you mean
The idea is to colour the wood and any finish over that would be matt to protect and waterproof.
So it will look natural like the Cutty Sark etc

Nice but that renders the laser etching by SLEC a waste of time

Has anyone experience of small proportional smoke generators to simulated diesel exhaust?

While looking for inspiration I found this interesting article https://www.boothbayregister.com/article/get-ready-some-awesome-wake-its-lobster-boat-racing-season/71672

Our (Maine) rules say the boats must be working lobster boats.”

Andy,
A grey teak look would work. Even that would show dirt, scuffs, dents & other warts caused by sea weed, mud, & the traps. Such mars would be mostly in the area of the pot hauling davit. Your build looks very good. Always look forward to your photos.
Don’t know if you saw them but in a separate post I added some photos of lobster boats in Plymouth Harbor. Felt more like hauling out weather rather than prepping for the season’s first set.

Andy,
Here is a link that might interest you. It is focused on WILD WILD WEST, a 28’ Wesmac hull. WWW set a speed record for its class two seasons ago. It is not a working lb such as the ones in your posted link. IMHO
the races between the working boats are more exciting.

Did that guy say 1000HP? That's the equivalent power of the PV-12 in the K5054 prototype Spitfire. That much poke just to haul lobster pots seems a bit like overkill to me. Are there really that few lobsters left in Maine?

My son just reminded me of a local shop that just specialises in wood coatings. I will visit tomorrow with some spare deck for sample colour testing.

I missed this tip. For sanding combings I used broad thin masking tape and course sandpaper. Then remove the tape and sand with 600 paper to flush. This is topped off with mahogany square section later.
I threw away the rear combing as it was poor ply and used an offcut of wood from the cabin sheets to remake so it's the same as the sides

I'm starting to err towards this colour for roofs and hull sides with white cabin

Dave,
WILD WILD WEST is not a working lobster boat. It is designed strictly for the lobster boat races. Saw it run and got an up close look a few years back in Pemaquid, Maine. It has had a couple of flips and at least one sinking in it’s history. There are quite a few racing-only lobster boats on the Maine racing circuit.
Once again, I find the working boat races much more interesting.

You still have a little to learn about the British sense of humour (humor), but don't let that stop you posting.

While applying primer I can say that I have filled the grain with the earlier resin but still retained the appearance that it is wood. An affect that is desirable given that it is a wooden vessel unlike the Portgarth that had to look like steel.  I have filled any holes and pits and re primered

Andy, Your proposed color scheme looks good. Lobster boats are painted according to the skipper’s taste. Have you been thinking about a name? Keep the photos coming...they show a some fine build.

Thanks Dave. I pretty much got the humor...after all I understand down Maine humor. :}  Entrance of these boats in the races rightfully stirs a lot of controversy with the lobstermen/women. Now let’s watch Andy’s progress.  :-))
