Oh, Andy! Are you going to have some fun masking those six short mahogany strips? Yup - I've been there and I did it (twice). Good fun!!  O0

I'm not masking them Dave
I didn't like the idea of CA ing them to finished paint work  %%

My plan is to apply resin and when painting is finished sand back to the mahogany. not bothered about the edges

Yep - that's certainly a plan. Stan and I would err towards using cyano onto finished paintwork, but only because we've both done it that way before and had no trouble with it (mine on another subsequent build). I've also used so-called 'canopy glue' for the same purpose with no adverse results.

Wouldn't life be dull if we all thought and acted the same way?  8)

Alternatively I may mask the whole rectangle off and hand paint the spaces.
I have already used CA on the cabin.
Ignore the black line on the hull it's nothing to do with the water line but was to aid shaping the chines  :-))

Before retiring last night I soaked the working deck halves with rubbing alcohol (£6.75 litre delivered) and clamped them down to the sub deck to make them set to the shape
This morning they now sit very snug with no fixings at all

Tip time, take it or leave it  :-)
I don't have years of experience but I have done a LOT of brass.
Etching primer does not perform on brass and car primer is too thick.

I use this chemical for all flux removal and cleaning.

I use exclusively Tamiya FINE primer for plastic & metal in grey or white.

Tamiya also dries fast and I top coat this in less than an hour.

For the crane to cabin fixing I've used a brass split pin and once formed around a same size steel rod I have soldered the split.

Once set up on the model at the right height and angle I've CA'd the pin to crane.

The instructions show brass nail through the top of the crane arm then bent to carry the pulley hanger.
I found this impossible and used brass wire instead and soldered a nut on top then filed to shape

Its coming along beautifully mate - I'll give that Tamiya primer a go as I agree with you etch primer just does not quite bite into brass deep enough and comes off quite easily

Thanks Mark. Yes Etch is meant for ferrous and aluminium. Just apply thinly nothing to gain from applying more than a covering and its expensive

The Pot winch was not to my liking and despite missing parts I was supplied with two cabin hatches.
The spindly legs were a fail too for me.
So I made it my way

I've now fitted a brass washer to the exhaust base and piped it for a smoke unit. Painted helm and throttles

Cab hatch and winch frame painted

He loves it so far but he's keeping a close watch

One for luck

The inner hull sides and ribs will be white. The cabin bulked will likely be white to. The coaming below the mahogany kicker will be cabin colour.

For now I'm thinking white for the hull exterior but all may change when I colour the deck silver grey with OSMO oil (in the post)

Just found this presumably for scratch builders  :-))  £10.12 delivered

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233024452632

I have this excellent book. Instructions are geared to a display model but with a lot of effort it probably could be converted to RC. In the 2010 Sep/Oct issue of Ships in Scale R.Royer adapted the plans to a miniature (24 cm) version which I constructed. Rather than impinge further on Andy’s thread I will post some photos of it on my lobster boats thread.

Andy,
Your installation of the pot hauler is more typical. For the snatch block that hangs from the davit you might want to consider the one sold by BlueJacket. Very realistic and the correct scale. Your boat is looking very good..excellent work.

Thanks Bill  :-))  Bluejacket are expensive to UK unfortunately. Still live in hope someone will make me one  %%

The BJ lobster boat is $430 dollars plus shipping plus import duty etc . A quite ridiculous price
My calculation makes it £450 to UK buyers after taxes and shipping.

P.S. thanks for the correct terminology! I do struggle you may have noticed  :embarrassed:

Andy,
I was suggesting their snatch block might work for you. Depending on size, they range in price from 1.45 to 2.94 BP. Shipping costs probably more than the part.  Yeah, their lb kit is expensive.

Apologies for sounding like I was issuing a correction. After all many things in the UK are termed differently than in the US. Those terms are just second nature to one who has been around lobstering. I hate to think of what words I might use to describe components of a puffer.

I've just addressed a problem that Stan pointed out to me.
The cabin roof warps in Sunshine and needs magnets.

So much easier to do with a detachable superstructure  :-))

Good morning  {-)

The provided white metal cleats are just not good enough for me infact there are no white metal fittings that I like at all  :((

I found these in my parts drawer as a better solution.

Brass sticks very well to the plastic with CA

Pictures say more

Decision time. One coat of cloth applied OSMO oil stain silver grey. a trial of a second coat will happen tonight.
The longer I look the more I like.

I’m liking it! Will be interesting to see what a second application looks like on the trial panel.
