Gone the whole hog. 12 hr drying time then I'll decide what next if anything.

Pit stop
Looking back to first post I've had two weeks away on holiday so not much over two weeks building this. I estimate she's at about 80% complete. Happy so far with my off the wall choices but struggling now with hull colour above and below.

Some photos to help me focus and near 250 of them so far in this thread.

That's a smartly turned out crew.
I would appreciate scale (I'm currently looking to muster 1:24 deckhands) and source from which they can be press ganged.
Thanks in anticipation.

This build is 1:12 scale and the figures are from mountfleet models who also do other scales.
These pre painted at this size are £15 each

Looking now at the sail cloth. The book says to brush Urathane (their spelling) into it. What product are Midwest refering to?
What is best for making the holes?
Thanks

The heat shield sprayed with Tamiya Nato black. I'm quite pleased with this idea and will certainly find other uses.
Tamiya silver leaf spray makes it look just like hydraulic brake line braid

The mast is primed and finished in Tamiya white. The top of the mast will be finished in another contrasting colour

I'm strongly erring towards dark green or BRG above the waterline. I've ordered some paints from wonderland models Edinburgh as currently they have 10% off Tamiya which covers the postage if you buy enough.

A test picture for Martin  :-))  it's not all about the camera, it's equally about the file size and web hosting.
This is still not the full size on my hosting site but click it for an example of resolution at near original with no compression.

My experience indicates to me that image size is the issue. I post in several other places where image size is never a problem. Perhaps it is a matter of cost for server allocation which is understandable. However, if the image size limitation could be eliminated posting would probably increase a lot.

Looking good Andy !

I remember spending many hours on early (crashing) versions of 'Google Earth' searching harbours along the coast of Maine for colour scheme ideas,
plumped for boring safe old white on my model, but I recall similar nicer pale greens like yours,
lots of light blues even yellow seemed popular in one area (poss. Bar Harbour?).

Looking at your pics, reminds me of one thing that bugged me at the time of building mine -
what a shame we have to paint the hull !  but the full size are all painted, hey ho.

Re the sail, looks like they want you to varnish it ?
this goes back to good old fashioned 1940's model yachting practice when they did varnish cotton sails - see VMYG website for info.
I don't recall doing this, might have used weak Tea to mucky it up a tad and mrs Zippy to sew a hem or two.

You can use teeny tiny brass eyelets to make the holes and stitch the seams or
my latest build - the small free sailing yacht, we were messing about with at Mayhem,
uses modern white kite rip-stop nylon sails,
whereby holes are melted with a hot needle and seams made with 1/4inch double sided tape.

Another idea - you could make an easier, cheats version and have the sail rolled up around the mast !
which is probably how the full size would spend most of its time - might look nice/different.
regards Paul

I think the varnish is as much to stop the cloth fraying. I’d rather have the sail working it would add interest  to playing with it  :-)
Yellow also crossed my mind but the shade would be so very important with that option
Red and green both go well also if the shade is right and I will do test cards first
Thanks Paul all food for thought  :-))

P.S I’m sticking with Tamiya spray as it has a nice sheen and touching up is very easy without respraying a whole panel as it blends itself so well

This just arrived to top coat the deck stain
I have a piece of deck with different amounts of stain on to test with this. At the moment she only has one coat.

Andy,
If your have not already planned to do so you might consider making the staysail removable by lifting the mast out. It’s presence is going to alter the maneuverability of the boat causing it to be more wind-set among other things. The staysail’s purpose is to reduce wave-induced rolling while trap hauling and to keep the head of the boat into the wind. You probably already know this so I may be preaching to the choir. :-))

Just a suggestion.

The manual says not to glue and I would not have glued it if it did  :-))
Most of my model is dismantle-able

No I did not know it’s true purpose thanks again

My mast is a snug fit without using a wedge as per instructions

I've settled on a single coat of the stain and now applied the matt oil which is still drying.

I'm going to ballast her tomorrow for a maiden sailing at Kirklees on Sunday. No need for paint as she's tight as a drum.
Weather permitting! Flaming June as usual for that last few years has been flaming raining
