Why do so many boats have a stand for the Radar that leans forwards. Does it somehow relieve the wind force transferred to the roof

When the hull is on plane the bow is angled upward. Raking the radar mount forward is an attempt to keep the radar array parallel to the waterline to improve fidelity.

Sorry Bill bit I just don’t see that
Regardless of the angle of the post if the radar is level at standstill and the boat goes into a plane it will still go out of level

Exactly my take on it Andy :-))
Think it's just aesthetic.

I’ve just had a google and found that an angle of 3 or 4 degrees is advised but this is regardless of the angle of the post. It still applies on any mounting so doesn’t explain the angled post.
Also the other boats in that picture don’t use a leaning mount

I think it is to get the radar as far forwards as possible

Ease of maintenance, maybe? You can reach it by standing on the cabin roof and you wouldn't need to lean over the cockpit roof to acces the radome.

I've remodelled and painted but not need to spend a fiver on a sheet of Becc decals

Certainly that is true Andy. If one gets down in the weeds with the initial installation, an inclinometer is used to determine bow angle at plane. The radome or the open array is then installed while the hull is at rest to look downward at an angle equal to the upward plane angle. That way the radar operates parallel to the water while underway. BUT, that is getting WAY down into the weeds. O0  Besides running takes place at different speeds and thus different angles. There are many reasons for the angled mount including those mentioned herein. If one is in a situation where a 3 or 4 degree angle makes a difference in the display fidelity one is having a really bad day. {:-{  Not all boats have an angled mount...many lobster boats have their radars mounted on an arch along with search lights, antennas, etc.
Makes for an interesting discussion.

Mine is pointing down 3.5 degrees  O0 {-)
It will never work though as its constructed from ladies cosmetic tops  %%

Excellent...you have minimized your radome’s cone of silence.

Example pic isn't supporting the argument much.  Out of the 5 boats, one has fwds pointed mount, one straight, one mounted (looks like) on the roof, and the one in the back, bit difficult to see but looks straight, or on a frame.  One has no radar at all.

Not seen a "preference" for forwards pointing in UK boats anyway, strange I did wonder also why in some pics why lobsterboat models had a backwards and bent pole for the steaming light, rather than just straight up.  Fashion maybe??

...Apologies, I "quoted" the relevant pic. but the forum seems to remove the image.  Tried 2 or 3 times to correct so you'll have to remember the pic I'm refering to above.

Lobstermen/women are all staunch individualists. They do what they think is right for them. Explains the differences you see in lobster boats from hull, engine choice, right hand/left hand, radar installation, & anything else you can think of. Well on them!

Your sctarch built effort looks good though!  But beware a potential problem I had with BECC stickers for labelling exactly the same thing.  They advertise 2 different sheets of stickers at different scales with the same product code!  I ordered one and got the other, seller wasn't very sympathetic though it was entirely their mis-advertising.  Hope you get the right sized sticker sheet / labelling, my radar stickers cost a tenner instead of a fiver, just kept the other stickers for future use on other models.

As I approach the finish line I'm wondering how the other three lucky people are doing with their kit?

I'm itching to build another

Just looked up the designation for a group of lobsters - it's known as a 'pod' so, if you ever get a few together for a sail you could call yourselves the pod fleet  %) .

I'm going to have to do some shots with a full size camera. The iPhone although good is not a big enough aperture to capture without distortion. This model looks so much better in the flesh.

Anyway I just love this shape despite the distance in the image being made smaller by the small lense

Sorry to butt in, Andy, but I've been in contact today with Ian at SLEC who tells me that they have been receiving requests for details of the kit. I must emphasise that there is NO KIT produced by SLEC for this model. SLEC will supply laser-etched deck planking overlay panels for this and most other boats if you can provide a suitable CAD file. The original Midwest kit has apparently gone out of production, but quite whether or not a new kit appears in the future is anyone's guess and would depend on many commercial factors.

Just arrived. I believe the correct orientation is rearward facing
