As and when I get my kit I'll take steps to "future-proof" the design for anyone who wants one in the future. Ain't these 'pooters wunnerful?

I'll trace all the parts full-size and retain the shapes in AutoCAD. The plan can be scanned........that's after I've finished all of the present umpteen projects! Don't hold your breath, anyone.

I wish I knew how to do that stuff  :((
I feel I want to make a BIGGER one  O0

Its not a heavy model (3583grams)(7.9lbs) so 1/6 would be great.
Portgarth is 33lbs

Google tells me action man is 1:6 scale  {-)

Hate to say but there's so many sketches and photo databases for these boats out here, combined with a feew good pics, it seems pretty easy to end-up with something fairly close to proptotype if you want to cut your own materials which seems not hard for this.  What exact prototype?  I've been watching for ages, also considering ORCA which seems the same.  Taranis has produced a perfect buld blog for the kit and photo's to scale one way or 'tother.  Perfect for a little ingenuity to make your own!!  It seems a very simple hullform anyway.

...Great build blog though.  Great modelling!

I built my model 30 years ago in that time I saw very few of these at club level or shows. The model is a very simple construction which builds to a very stable platform. It would appear that my thread and the thread by taranis have stirred a lot of interest in this model. It's a shame Midwest seem to have dropped this kit.

Thanks for the accolade Rich  :embarrassed:

Stan I believe MidWest dropped all kits and possibly don't exist anymore. Ebay just finds old stock items

I like the horn bare so I lacquered it. I have quite a few items on the way from CMB to fit yet

There's more  :-)

Busy day. I've had to increase my wife's workspace in her craft room, managed another 2.2 metres so she's a happy bunny.
Then clean my road bikes for sale.
Then get ready for club open day tomorrow.

Managed a bit more, drawing from stock photos I decided on this location for a life ring (not finished)

Deck retainer from brass angle tapped to deck

Cabin side retainer from brass and wood

Brass 1.4mm bolt to make sure I don't lose it at play time

I'm happy with that

Hi Andy,
Thoroughly enjoyable day at your lovely lake yesterday was had by one and all,
has to be one of the best model boating lakes in the country for access etc and nice setting.

A quick flick through my old American mags looking for lobster boat info - found 3 Midwest adverts
dating back to the 1980's, I've scanned and will post below.

We think I may have taken the US mags with the original lobster boat build articles to Beale Park on that fateful day
and might have given them to the guy who bought the models,
but will have a trawl through my collection just in case.  Regards Paul

This is the man who built that for the photos and the build plan is dated 1987 with his name on it.

Sherlock here has deduced that Midwest are still in business selling hobby timber but gave up their kits years ago.
I have contacted them with some questions and to see if they would object to the Lobster boat being produced by someone else

Mike told me orf for not having fitted his flag  {-)

So I decided to use a mast stump for sailing days rather than on display

I've only just started to read through this thread.
What a beautiful looking boat.
I am in awe of your building skills.
I saw this quote "Not sure the planking spacing around the fore & aft lines for the lift out section is/are correct   >:-(" title="Tickoff" class="smiley" style="vertical-align: bottom; font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.92px; background-color: rgb(236, 237, 243);"> .........Derek"
I have looked and looked and looked again at the photo that this comment is referring to and I cannot see anything wrong with the planking spacing. However, I am not one hundred percent sure where "around the fore & aft lines for the lift out section" actually is.
If someone could expand on this, I would be very grateful.

Maybe I need to go back to Specsavers or get a better magnifying glass.

This boat looks absolutely perfect to me and I can only dream of producing a model build of this quality.

An equally perplexed Andy  {-)

I have managed to acquire a second kit and I will be building a second with a different style
I’ll transfer all the shapes onto fresh wood stock and save the kits parts

Seeing your build on this boat led me to buying a Lesro Sportsman kit just so I could build something out of wood again. Can't say I like the Lobster boats myself but you've done a grand job of putting it together

Thanks Richie
Yes it really is a nice feel doing old traditional wood kits
I hope you’ll share your build  :-))

...Think I remember that at the time.  Seemed a random comment at the time.
Nice build though personally I'd have that mizzen mast over the flag any day at the moment.  Each to their own. It's such a clear build thread, you could pretty much scale templates off the pics if you wanted to build your own.  Close-enough anyway!

It’s not appropriate to sail with the mast up tho Rich
The mast is used while pot hauling only so will be used for display only and the flag for sailing
Nothing is glued and is interchangeable

...think that was my comment earlier wondering how well it would sail with it.  It would look better with the mast fitted but the sail furled IMO.  Not my choice though.

Yes it was your comment  :-))  and indeed it sails fine with the mast but doesn't look right.

A flutter is much better

Furled or not and I can't find any stock photos of a mast being used on the real boats
