What a coincidence !
« on: May 11, 2019, 07:51:43 pm »

What a coincidence !

Whilst at the Beale Park event last weekend we heard that some of Richard Beale's massive collection of boats would be offered for bids, in aid of Richards charity.  I seem to have come away with a 1/96 WW1 HMS Marshall Soult with a nice twin turret of 15 inch guns.  It was in a bit of a state, no internals, and age-seized prop shafts.

A nice restoration project I thought.

I just heard that Nick has also just got one the same.  What a coincidence !

It’s a small world Bob, and we do share very similar tastes too. We do love our oddities don’t we! :}

Gosh, that brings back memories of the old build article in RM / MMI. I always thought this might make an interesting "micro" size model on account of the increased beam at the WL!

Nick and Bob.

Have either of you tested your Marshalls in water yet? How do they sit as regards waterline? I have the Moderlkartowe magazine coming with the plans for HMS Roberts and I wondered if the build techniques used as per the Sarik/Model Boats plan provided a realistic level in water, or whether I would have to build mine in lead lined concrete!

I imagine your models having a draught of 3 or 4 mm  {-) The Abercrombies were slightly narrower than the Marshalls, but their weapons system was lighter. I have considered making the bulges out of concrete.

Hi Ian

The model I have sits in the water so the bulges are just covered by the water. There is a single 12v 10amp/he SLA and a small 6v 4amp/hr SLA for the radio. There is built in ballast in the bow and in the extreme section of the stern. I had on the water last year and I’ll see if I can find the pictures.

So, just about right if you added the effect of a some extra coal or secondary armament. I don't think I need to reach for the readymix! A piccy or two would be nice, but don't move one half of your house over to the other side looking for them if they are not easy to get at.

The 14 inch turret will be fun. I am considering going all Geoff on it with smoke generation. The turret only need train one side, and I could paint her brown for when she (Raglan) was on the Salonika front.

That’s sounds cool, love the WW1 monitors. Always liked the look of the early ones :-))
I’ll find some pictures of the internals for you too.

There is film of Nick's Marshall Soult on the RC Model Warship YouTube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt4tp1SS9QQ&t=106s
The event was at Deans Marine and before Nick embraced the models future embellishments.
You can see how she sits in the water and how manouverable the model is, due to the flat bottom.

Thanks for showing me that Mr Low Notes! She looks just right in the water, and has that car on ice effect of a flat bottomed vessel. I expect if Nick sailed it at scale speed(!!!!!) it would wander all over the place.

Nice to see these. i looked up Marshal Soult in 'keeping the seas' by captain evans of hms broke /crusader re the dover patrol.

Actual speed was somewhat limited. quote “ As the season progressed, the monitors, from various causes, began to lose speed, or rather to go more slowly, for their customary sluggish movement forward could hardly be called " speed." The Marshal Soult at one time was not capable of doing more than four knots…  ”  . as a destroyer captain he was clearly unimpressed!

but apparently admiral bacon "generally slept on board", and "his staff usually had their meals there.." so desirable accommodation nonetheless..

wish  you well with getting her back in the water.

I rather think they make nice models too and may have to build one when I can no longer lift Iron Duke or Invincible in a few years - just to keep working guns on the water!

Now a row of monitors in a line blazing away would look rather neat!! drool, drool, drool!!

Amen Geoff! Complete with aiming buoys and drifters!!! May be we should build the monitors first!

Re accommodation: The big gun monitors of WW1 had loads of space on the upper deck for adding accommodation for extra crews as secondary armament was added. The open sides were just plated up! WW2 Monitors were cramped from the word go.

I will push HMS Raglan up the list to join in. If I can make that relaxed looking American turret then the rest should be easy. I ordered the Polish model boats magazine with the plans for Roberts the other day, so should have the impetus.
