Help with Planet T5
« on: May 20, 2019, 08:37:26 PM »

I have just acquired a Planet T5 RC system.  Old but never used.

I'm trying to connect to my boat but having problems setting up.

I'm using Mtronics esc with 12volt battery.

The motor is connected to channel 1 ... works fine
The rudder is connected to channel 2 ... works fine
A water pump is connected to channel 3 .... no response
A smoke generator is connected to channel 4 ..... no response

The water pump and smoke generator have been tested from a battery and both are fine.

I'm a bit new to this gadgetry so I'm sure its something very simple and down to me having to done something or omitted something

Any advice much appreciated

Both the channel three and four function you are trying to connect directly to the Rx need to be switched by something else. You cannot connect them directly to the Rx. At its simplest, you need a servo switching a microswitch switching your smoke unit or water pump.
There are other options available but my bacon is cooked, so sandwich :}

Sorry , should have stated, there are microswitches wired in to both accessories

And servos? A photo may help to identify the problem.
Bacon and Egg sandwich went down well by the way :-))

Pleased you enjoyed it  :-)

Difficult to get photos as wiring is mostly concealed and boat is 54 inches long.

I'll try and describe.

Battery is connected to esc and esc is connected to 900 CEM motor.
Rudder servo is linked to receiver channel 2.  Esc is linked to channel 1 .

Everything working good up to there.

Tonight i installed the Graupner smoke unit and the water pump.  They both have a Turnigy switch in the positive line and the connection from those switches go to channels 3 and 4 on the receiver.
The negative line goes straight to the battery supply.  There are no other servos, as you asked about

Both items worked fine when tested directly from the battery.

Attempting to save the main battery for the motor and rudder, these two accessories are powered from a different 12 volt battery.

This is an identical set up to two other boats I have but I use a SkyFly system on those and have no problems, that's why Im suspecting I may not be set up properly with the Planet system.

Okay, first thing, swap the two 12v batteries over. This should eliminate a flat battery from the problem. Then swap ch1 and 2 into 3 and 4 and vice versa. See if your motor and rudder work on the other channels. If they do, there is an issue with the switchers. Try throwing the servo reversers on the two switcher channels, also try moving the mechanical trims to their extremes.
I don't remember if the Planet sets have a dual rate switch, the only one I have has been butchered with buttons and stuff! If there is one make sure it is set to 100%.
After that, not sure what else to suggest..

I'll have to leave that until tomorrow evening but thanks for your help.

I will let you know the outcome.  I'm sure its something very straightforward and probably my own omission.

Im confident with my wiring as I have the same set up on two other boats but the switches are brand new but untried.

i could also try the SkyFly system as another elimination step.

Thanks again.  I'll be back

Find a good channel, plug everything into that to test.  Alternatively, I never believed in servo testers until I got one to try...

People persist buying them from China on E-Bay, but personally I'd rather recommend a model shop the trade to keep them open.

Do you mean micro switches or electronic relays -if it's microswitches just depress the button/lever to test?

I always though Channel 1 was direction and Channel 2 was motor though, but I'm still on analogue radios?

I have been given a couple of Turnigy switch units as non working,
only to find the label showing the two red wires to be the wrong way
round. swapping load and battery got them working.

If using two batteries then negs need to be connected together to
enable switch to work.

Sorted ....  Hoorray.

I tried everything that has been suggested as a process of elimination and finally wired everything up to just one battery

 and,

Everything now works perfectly.  Phew.

The problem, apart from my limited knowledge, is that the batteries weren't linked.

So I will now tidy everything back up, fit things to their permanent positions, and connect the negative terminals between the two batteries.

Thank you all very much for your help and advice.  Excellent
