Annimating turrets
« on: May 22, 2019, 08:26:50 am »

Hello people...

I need some ideas as to how to animate my turrets on the Manxman..  Dont think I want to use Arduino, too much involved and a lot of wires..

I was thinking of using geared pulleys with some sort of mini timing belt. If I can somehow fix the pulleys to the servo I think it could work...  I need to make sure that I can get to the servos should anything go wrong with them, hense why I dont want to use direct drive.. I could use the traditional method of arms and bent control rods I know. but I dont think I can get the rotation I want,,  if I fit a larger toothed pulley onto the servo and a smaller one say half the size, in my head this would make the smaller one turn twice the rotation of the servo..

The trouble is , im having a hard time locating such pulleys and belts.. obviously the belts need to be narrow as there is not going to be much in the way of pressure to turn, Im going to run a shaft from each turret through two small bearings fixed in place to give extra smooth turning.

So does anyone know where or who I can talk too or look for bits etc... or does anyone have any better ideas??
some help would be great.
Cheers Ian

If you can keep the turrets free turning, then simple pulleys with elastic bands for belts ought to suffice.  Otherwise, gearing is one solution, but quite a bit more complex

As an option make up your own bowden cables using the "net curtain stretchy white line stuff" with fishing line inside. This will let you turn anything anywhere with the drive motor or servo being remote. It does not have to be tight and works very well.

You can get "servo slow" devices which just plug in if you don't have this feature on your transmitter of if there is not enough movement in a standard servo for what you want use a servo sized sail winch and again adjust the end points and speed on the transmitter. Again electronic devices are available if this is not a feature on your transmitter.

Hope this assists

I've made mine, for 1/200 Bismark using nano servos. The sound and smoke are independently controlled from RC

Neat, so how do you make the smoke and pump it out?

Small smoke generator, from Seuthe. It's going out using a small air pump and a valve

What diameter are the turret bases/barbettes on this 'Manxman'?

I'm interested in tiny versions of regular size things.
