Speedline Shannon
« on: May 22, 2019, 10:49:53 am »

I will be retiring from the military in 2 years and as retirement present to my self I'm thinking of getting a 1/12 Speedline Shannon.

I have been honing my skills on various boats over the years so have the confidence in my ability to build it .What I would like to know what are like to sail ? Any issues to beware of ?

Apologies if this has been asked before but a search turned up blank

Thanks in advance

I use 8 but 4 would do for basics
8 months in with plenty yet to do

To clarify
I have one channel to each of six servos
1 channel switching cooling and bilge pumps
1 channel switching radar
2x8 channel receivers are used and each has one channel lost to power input (I don’t use the Esc BEC) so I have four channels spare
I’m not doing lighting on mine
I recommend having a separate supply to port and starboard servos for insurance against total failure and 3 amps per side preferably

You can find help with your speedline at the link at the bottom

Sorry that the iCloud links haven’t loaded

Here is early testing at Bridlington MBC I crashed head on into the bank just before this hence the front end damage. Crash was due to inadequate servo feeds. Sometimes we learn the hard way  {-)

Thank you for all the info , have been weighing up my options of a Severn class or the shannon and have come to the following conclusion

Severn
Lots of brass to be soldered , seems he harder of the 2 to build but simple electronics

Shannon
A lot less fiddly with regards to brass and appears simpler to build over all but more complicated electronics.

Think I can over lack of knowledge of the electronics better than making a good job of all the soldering

The electrics are only as complicated as you make them
Having each servo on its own channel means you can use mixes just like flyers do

There is a lot of brass on the Shannon too and I made all my own stanchions and sold the resin ones. The £60 came in handy
All my brass is here, you may find the photos helpful https://techno.smugmug.com/Shannon/Brass/n-RxMTML/
Guess which is mine  :-)

Explanation
Two motors both forwards rotating only ,mine can be operated independently or together at the flick of a switch

Two reversing buckets independent of each other

Two trim tabs that need to respond to speed and bucket operation

My trim tabs deploy proportional to speed

Each trim tabs is mixed with each bucket to come up as bucket goes down

Not overly complicated  :-))  actually simplified and any flyer should be able to help you with mixing

Two jet steerable nozzles can be unified but mine are separate and mixed to work together. This way if one servo circuit fails I still have steering

Sounds simple enough, I have played with mixing before using v tail mixers and on the tx for rc tank control.

Does the MBD kit require a lot of scratch building ?

In my mind the biggest job it the brass and this is pretty much the same. Yes a lot more scratchbuilding
There are pros and cons to both.
I had mine (speedline) bought for me as a 60th present from the wife otherwise I may have stuck to tugs  {-)

I do like the speedline drives having modified them they are solid performers
I think 1000kv motors would be enough compared to my 1185kv SK3’s

That looks simple enough, do the servos operate the steering or the trim tabs?
