Canadian style logging tug scratch build
« on: May 26, 2019, 02:08:05 pm »

I photographed this at Mayhem meet. Creation of Paul "mrzippy"
I rather like the scale and creativity so here are some pictures of a work in progress  :-))

Love this but what size is it?
I think the figure at the controls might need to be larger unless your lens has distorted perspective.

Paul would have to answer that but I'd say it reflects this type of vessel after 1 minute 35 https://youtu.be/kG-dU4ueeCw?t=102

So MY choice of thread title and forum section are potentially incorrect. Reported to admin  :embarrassed:

These boats are known as sidewinders - Michael Portillo had a ride on one in a recent Canadian Railway Journey.

There are lots of pictures & videos on the web.

https://www.google.com/search?q=logging+sidewinder&hl=en&tbm=vid&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjI6Pz31LniAhVhs3EKHW9DClgQ_AUIDCgD&biw=1486&bih=806&dpr=1.25

For reference the boats that push the log rafts around are known as Dozers.

https://www.harlowmarine.com/shop/sold-listings/sold-boom-boats-equipment/bv188/?wpp_export=print

Dozers normally have traditional drive but Sidewinders have what looks like an outboard leg drive. Traditional drive & a Ministeve type bow thruster works well.

I am trying to work out what the rubbing strips are made out of. On the real boats they are heavy angle iron. These things get some of the hardest use possible & are built accordingly.

Wow Andy that phone of yours certainly takes great photo's, unfortunately highlighting my rubbish silver soldering -
but we are looking at a work in progress with lots of filing, sanding and filling to do,
before we think about reaching for the paint.

The model is a Canadian Log Dozer or Boom Boat, built to Action Man/Dragon figure 1/6 scale -
around 36 inches length, 15 inch beam, deck stands 12 inches above the keel -
it's a really chunky model and will weigh?? I dread to think - the real boats decks are awash when in use,
therefore a ton of church roof required !

The angled rubbing strips on the model are fibreglass mouldings - I glued a 1/2" triangular balsa single master rail
around one half of the hull, filled and painted it, covered it in brown gloss parcel tape and took moulds off it in 3 sections
front, centre and back.
These were used to cast 8 fibreglass rubbing strips padded out with sections of balsa triangle to help fill out the moulds
(the striped sections in the photos) this was a real pain, taking an age to produce.

I would have preferred to use a Sidewinder outboard style drive leg, but after enquiring on various Forums -
Graupner drives lacked reliability and size, and I didn't relish the idea of shelling out £500 on a Bauer unit,
therefore settled for traditional dive and a Ministeve thruster in the style of the boat in the attached photo.

I intend fitting a Forge Electronics sound unit, home made smoke generator and make the driver operational
turning the steering wheel etc.
regards Paul

Awesome  :-))  please keep your thread updated. You can email photos to me if necessary.
Never mind the soldering! I spend most of my time with a bunch of files  {-)

Very nice model.

Andy
You can find a small kit on eBay for £40 ish
Perhaps if you fancy a model yourself
you could enlarge plans to suit the desired sale and scratch build?

Thanks
I'd be quite happy to build purely from photos and be creative like Paul. Most of my Portgarth I ignored the plans and templates that are grossly inaccurate.
However I have far too much to build already for a couple of years at least. Happy to watch this one progress  :-)

Hi Andy,
Sadly nothing to report since your lovely pics posting - the building of a new outside workshop capable of housing the big tug
put paid to modelling for a while, and work on this stopped throught the cold weather - been playing with a small own design,
table top sized steam launch since the self isolation hit.
I keep an eye on Mayhem, noticed your down with Shingles at the moment, look after yourself I know what a nightmare that can be !
Alex Dowling from Bermuda USA on FaceacheBook Mayhem has built a similar huge model of a small logging tug,
he's posted pics of it up and running this week so I need to get my skates on !

Very nice Ray similar lines to Alex's big beastie on FaceBook Mayhem -
talking of big beasties, I'm starting to wonder about what I've created? with regards to its 11 inches plus draught etc??
will need to watch carefully where I point the thing, and that'll be after I've managed to get the brute into the water !
Thinks it will be model in the water first - then install batteries and ballast.

I'm liking Alex's idea of pushing a large person carrying barge - should go down at treat with our local park ranger.
