Vintage 36 inch yacht information required
« on: June 02, 2019, 08:57:42 pm »

Hi everyone

I was given this model yacht a little while back and it’s been sitting in my Dad’s shed since. I have no idea about yachts and their evolution of design especially of the vintage type.
See the pictures below but I would like to know if this is a 36R class and if anyone can tell roughly what era it’s from. It had a lead keel which is screwed in to the wooden part of the keel. Hull measures 36 inches (hence why I think it’s a 36R class) by 9 inches beam. Judging by the mast it has 2/3rds replaced, sail looks old but the steering tiller looks original but when compared to traditional versions it appears to 180 degrees out? There is no access into the hull and is all timber built with some rather old varnish on it
Any ideas would be grateful received.

Hi
That's a nice looking yacht ! ... You should be able to glean a lot of information from the Internet via people like the Vintage Model Yacht Group... http://www.vmyg.org.uk/index.htm and Nylets, who have made the sails for a couple of my restorations... http://www.nylet.co.uk/
There are a couple of pictures below of how these are rigged, which may help and give a shout if you need anything else...  ;D

R in 36R means Radio.
I think your yacht precedes
the RC era Nick
Mike is on the right track with
his input.
Get it working and it will keep you
fit. Sail across the lake, run round and turn
It for a sail back, run round, catch it, ad infinitum
Fit as a butcher's dog after a few outings.

R in 36R means Radio.

Actually the R in 36R stands for "restricted" not 'Radio'    :-) ... The class is an old free-sailing class, details of which are here... https://www.sfmyc.org/website/images/stories/yachts/36r_class_rating_rules.pdf

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies- I had a feeling from my limited knowledge of yachts that it could be a 36R, the rest of the measurements seem to match this too. I’ll contact the vintage yacht group for further information as I’d like to restore it for Wicksteed Park’s 100th anniversary in 1921 as it looks like it’s got some age to it.
I’ll have a play and rebuild her properly as I want to retain the originality of the hull and if possible the remaining sail.

That one doesn’t even have a keel, good thing I’ve got plenty of lead to make one!

Thanks to Stan for the chat this evening, after seeing some pictures on the VMY group website she certainly has similar features in her fittings and hull as the 36R built in 1941 by a chap in Preston. A potential sister maybe... :-))
