Mayhem 2020......23/24 May
« on: June 16, 2019, 07:17:45 pm »

well, I have deliberately left it a month to get over the 2019 Mayhem.
next year is a significant year, it will the the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. It will be the last time there will be a big event for WWII. So to mark the occasion the Mayhem Crew would like to invite all to participate in a weekend review. this can be any boat, ship or sub that served in the war.  Let's dig out those old corvettes, landing craft battleships and if any the little ships from Dunkirk.
same format as previous, but I will list below the standard stuff.
host... Wicksteed Model Boat Club
http://www.wicksteedparkmbc.com/
venue... Wicksteed Park,  Kettering
https://wicksteedpark.org
price, Mayhem is FREE entry...But Wicksteed Park charge for car parking, sorry we have no control over that.
the Mayhem carpark is 100yds from the lake, trolleys and help are available on request.
There are very few rules.frequency control for 27 and 40mhz as usual. 2.4 can go on anytime. this is a total free sailing event. there may be times you are asked to vacate the lake for special events.
sail smart, sail safe.
free tea and coffee available, donations always welcome.
sailing starts officially at 10am both days and finishes when you go home.
camping is available via Wickstead Park. please keep an eye on this forum for discounts on camping if we can get them. this normally comes through in mid April.
that's it, if I have forgotten anything our LORD AND LEADER will in full, and if he doesn't I'm sure SWEETCHEEKS NICK will!

What about VJ Day - or is the 14th Army still the forgotten army?

VJ Day, in case I'm mistaken, is the 15th of August. Mayhem at Wicksteed has been in May since it began...

I hope that you will welcome all appopriate models which to my mind includes commercial shipping of the era. I don't consider military naval crews were any more heroic than merchant navy crews. I think this contribution often gets underplayed because of the need of the military to celebrate past actions.

Just a thought.  :-)

Hi Tug Fanatic

I think that was implied by the any boat which served comment- the Merchant Navy played an important role in both wars so it’s rightly so we have them too.

To everyone

As Klunk says, this is to celebrate the end of WW2 even though it didn’t finish in the East until August, we are not forgetting about this. We can’t move the dates as we don’t want to upset the model boat calendar and step on any other organised show’s toes. So let’s us see those ships that served during the war, everything from aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, corvettes, frigates, MTBs, freighters, coasters, trawlers, submarines and everything in between!  :-))

I know the merchant fleet are grossly overlooked, so any co tribution on that part would be fantastic!

I would like to come again :-))  However I will camp nearby and pay the £6 entry instead. This is much better value for us. Wicksteed park pricing for camping is brainless.

Hi Andy

Just to let you know that we are having discussions with the park regarding the campsite and the discount and we will let everyone know the results of said meeting when it concludes. :-))

Appreciated Nick but they don't have a clue and charge a silly price for being 4ft over 20ft while you can have a car a caravan and an awning taking up far more space for less in same sloping field
Fair price full facilities and easy straight drive no kids kicking balls about and throwing tantrums  {-)

Well it’s up to you Andy, I’m not going to dissuade you from camping elsewhere. Perhaps whatever I come up with may change your mind but I can’t change the the presence of children because it’s a public park and campsite. Hope to see you there at the lakeside next year though. :-))

as a note for 2019 the camping prices were
discounted price of £20 per night(fri/sat)  this included the carpark for the weekend.
Not sure how that adds up against the local campsite. I know Wicksteed were actually charging £35 for the same 2 nights. Nick did a good job on the discount for us.  and I know there is no electrical hookup, but does that really matter? its 2 or 3 days.

Looking forward to it already.
Tramp steamer will be back along with steam picket boat (if I can get boiler certtificate).
Really enjoyed this event and being able to put faces to names on forum made it well worthwhile.
Thanks again for the photos Martin.

Looking forward to it, it's already in the calendar.

Never built anything military, might have to start thinking out the box in time for a winter project - should be exciting and it's a great subject matter.

as a note..discounted price of £20 per night(fri/sat)  this included the carpark for the weekend.
Not sure how that adds up against the local campsite.
We paid £56 a night 7 miles down the road (Car and caravan, no awning) so you can't really complain at those prices.

hey Tug, as a first military boat you can't go wrong with a mqtchbox/reveller 1/72 flower class. they come up regularly on ebay and quite cheap. I have never paid more than £20 for an unstarted kit
ps I have 9!

Looks like there will be a full compliment of Scots lads coming to the next event :-))
Unfortunately, due to health problems, I couldn't make it the past two years, so I'm really looking forward to joining all you lads and lasses next year.
Is there anything happening with the "Secret Ten" next year?
All the best. Bri.
