Which phase of building do you never look forward to ??
« on: June 18, 2019, 10:21:29 am »

Every hobby has its 'ups and downs'.The one phase of building a model boat that I never look forward to is setting the motor mount(s) in the exact necessary alignment.I've used , I believe, all the usual tried and tested ways

a) Locking the coupling with tubes
b) MMM's brass sliding alignment tool
c) Ammeter connected and running the motor to detect least current drawn
d) Line of sight, looking up the tube
e) Staring into the hull for hours waiting for an inspiration from the almighty

What part of building a model do YOU not look forward to ??

The deck. I always mess that bit up, lining it up right, making it exactly the right size or whatever I just always manage to get it wrong. If I could only buy one pre-made part of a model boat it would be the flipping deck!

I resorted in the end to a model car front axle cv joint, and a built in adjustment to be able to tweak the angle of things.

Sanding after fiberglass cloth and 3 coats of resin
Worth it in the end but what a job.

That bit after designing it and before launching it. The rest I enjoy!

Peeling off the masking tape and hoping you don't remove the paint with it.

Painting! I've got better and more patient over the years but it is still my biggest weakness. Boats generally look reasonable when finished with little sign of the frustration entailed in getting them to look like that.

Definitely painting, especially with big things like boats. Overspray and paint dust make so much mess.  I used to build 1/43 resin car kits, and 1/35 military. Painting them was OK, once I got around to making a small spray booth with an extractor and used an airbrush rather than rattle cans.
Is it even possible to paint a boat hull with an airbrush? I imagine keeping a "wet edge" would be impossible?

Windows runs a close second. I used to use Microscale Kristal Klear for cars. easy to work with, as any excess can just be wiped off after setting with a damp cotton swab. No good for boats, as the windows would just fall out when it got wet. Canopy glue is much harder to work with

Painting is the only bit I enjoy now as you know you are getting to the end of the build and the model starts to come to life. Everything else just takes me too long.

The biggest bugbear with painting is drying times. Really need to relax and be patient over as many weeks as it takes.
No prizes for finishing it quick and it sitting on the shelf with lots of regrets

At the moment... planking! I’ve done so much planking with 2-3mm wide planks with graphite pencil caulking that it’s given me a Captain Darling twitch! %%
That why my next couple don’t have deck planks!

Removing old paint from the hull of a restoration /rebuild project, especially where it seems to have been applied with a 2" brush about 20 years ago!

(I still can't resist the challenge though)  :embarrassed:

The bit where you throw it at the lake and it either stops mid air, or as soon as it hits the water %)
