Amati Classic Yacht Heritage 46 Grand Banks Model
« on: June 22, 2019, 08:08:45 am »

Having been bought this kit for my big 70 it would appear that top weight will be a problem. This morning I Have weighed the wood items supplied in the kit and they weighed 4lb 9 oz this does not include the dinghy. It looks like I will need to find a lighter material for construction plastic card  may be a option. The dinghy weighs 3.6 oz seating 11 oz and the hull   3lb 6oz. Amati have produced a beautiful model that will be a pleasure to build and sail. I hope to source materials during the summer and start the build in the Autumn

Hi Stan and all others interested.
This thread may be helpful in pictures at least. I've not read it in detail but there may be mistakes to learn from

Quite right John, it's neither a schooner OR a trawler, it's a Grand Banks Cruiser.

Why can’t it be a schooner with no sails just like the many yachts without sails

The most expensively maintained Yacht in history?....... O0

Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia, is the former royal yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, in service from 1954 until 1997. She was the 83rd such vessel since King Charles II acceded to the throne in 1660, and is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the racing cutter built for the Prince of Wales in 1893. During her 43-year career, the yacht travelled more than a million nautical miles around the globe. Now retired from royal service, Britannia is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a popular visitor attraction with over 300,000 visits each year.[2]

OK Topic title changed yet again.
This time to fit in with the description on the model's instruction book, as found on the internet.
Not as described by a supplier

There are motor yachts and sailing yachts but, as far as I am aware, there is no such thing as a motor schooner. However, I could be wrong :D

HI Guys this post seems to have stirred up a few people so lets all calm down.  The official title should read Grand Banks Heritage 46. I have now checked the kit and marked all the parts ready hopefully for a build to start in late September. To lighten the kit much of the material will have be substituted and various parts remade from plastic card and wood veneer applied over the top. With regards to power for this model  I need your help with brushless motors for this project. The model is 880 mm in length two shafts 35mm props 7.4 lipo. Do not need high speed motors and of course E S C.

Given twin props I reckon the motor I've used in the Lobster boat would be fine 28/36 750kv mine is turning a 45mm 3 blade.
This will give 5,550 rpm max at 7.4 volts. Obviously more on a fresh charged battery but it only goes as fast as you make it.

Currently no stock but I've set an alert for when they're back. Really cheap!

Alternatively they still have 950KV in stock same dimensions 7,030 RPM at same volts

I have a spare motor if you wanted to take my advice offered so you could set up your drive train.

This is the ESC I've used and I'm very pleased with it. A little sweetie and dead easy to program once you grasp it.
Again the price is keen

Hi Taranis.

I'm debating whether to buy this kit but before I proceed Id appreciate  some guidance in respect of the following questions:-

(1) what adhesive weas used to affix the the simulated clinker planking to the hull and has its adhesion withstood  the test of time once immersed in the wet stuff?
(2) Did you take any special precautions to seal the planking?

The same questions apply to the deck planking.

Finally, did the kits' construction manual recommend the types of adhesives to be used for the models' fabrication

Thanks in anticipation.

There is no doubt this model will build up to be a show stopper. Full credit to Amati for producing this kit but I feel to convert this model to RC some big changes in construction will be needed. I hope to source all items during the summer to complete the build.  More info and pictures when items are bought.

Thank you Peter
Back in stock at UK warehouse but the ESC I posted is now out of stock. UK require a spend of £40 for fee delivery.
I ordered quite a lot of items from the EU warehouse last night and got another 10% discount.
I got mounts for these motors at Leeds model shop under £3 each as seen in my Lobster build

Hi update on my winter project. Materials purchased for construction of the cabin area light ply and styrene to be used. Brushless motors and two E S C  and lipo batteries will provide power. Props and shafts still to be purchased. Two pictures showing the b/ less motors that may be used.
