what was the colour of the rigging on these ships?
1. tan (natural)
2. white (chalked or limed)
3. black (tarred)

Wot bits of rigging?
Some black tarred?Some bleached by the sun?Some new natural hemp?

I believe in an old thread it was said that the static structural lines i.e. those that were there to hold masts etc and were never changed or climbed were tarred therefore black.


Those that were climbed or adjusted to move yards etc were natural i.e. hemp / brown, as they were affected by the salt water they rotted and got darker even to the point of being black and generally were replaced more frequently, would not expect any rope to be white in normal use, maybe in special ceremonial cases.


Dlcast would be best to advise.

In theory, the only white rope was/is on Britannia. Other Royal yachts may have had the same. If it's the WW1 Skirmisher, then HMS Caroline in Belfast should be the same. I don't know when/if tarring was discontinued but you may want to check when wire rope usage began.
