Yellow Duck
« on: July 01, 2019, 09:59:01 am »

I have been asked by one of our club members if it is possible to convert the duck in the picture to remote control.
I have not got a clue where to cut it to gain access to the inside or what glues to use to seal a prop shaft in.
I would be grateful for any help and information. I can only find information on Mayhem relating to decoy ducks.

Is this of any help:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1161019-R-C-Duck

If you follow the method from post 26 on you don't cut the top of the duck & you don't need to glue an unknown plastic.

If you just fix a sealed box (IP65?)  to the bottom of the duck remember that a 2.4Ghz aerial needs to be above water level.

The rubber ducky duck should have the same problems and solutions as the decoy, just a different colour.
Playmobil (I think) did a pirate ship with the underwater box arrangement which is reported to have worked OK.  Mostly a matter of keeping the water out of the box while being able to have access and ensuring that the aerial is above the water surface.
Depending on the plastic used, the much reviled hot glue gun glue could do a good job, forming an actual weld.  A trial on the underside, out of sight, would be advisable.

I coverted this decoy https://www.facebook.com/146538089240896/photos/pcb.166215227273182/166215027273202/?type=3&theater followed the wing line with a sharp knife to get access drilled an hole for the propshaft and rudder left the decoy weight inplace then hot glued it all in, MTroniks m400 motor on 7.2 and it works took about 2 hours.  I would say the yellow duck would be the same you would just need to ballast it I had that problem solved as the decoy came with its own ballast.

This is how I did mine, pretty simple really.
It will need a bit of ballast towards the rear to stop it nose diving. :-))
I glued plasticard to the bottom to make it more rigid before installing the propshaft and rudder.

Klz & big_bri

I understand some of the decoys are made of Polypropelene which is very difficult to glue anything to. I couldn't even guess about the yellow duck.
What adhesives are you using & trust?

Thanks for the pictures I have printed your post off and will give it to our club member. Do you remember what glue you used to seal the rudder post and prop shaft in with.
Thanks to all for your advice

Hi Tug Fanatic, I glued everything in with hot glue, Servo, Motor mount, Prop and Rudder I will try and take a a few photos.  The only thing I will say is when you glue the prop in don't have your hand under the hole it went through, I was holding the prop in line then glued the hot glue ran straight through and was burning me I refused to let go trying to keep the prop in line but WoW I suffered for weeks afterwards.

I know that it is more work but if you can make the head turn it adds an enormous amount. Lots of the internet ducks have them. You might care to watch this:

Thank you. Have you remembered that Hot Glue becomes very brittle when cold? Probably doesn't matter in this case.

A 14in duck decoy is available for £4.08 delivered.

Giant yellow ducks are more expensive! £14 delivered but as this included UK postage in a big box I guess that they might be cheaper locally:

An alligator head for £15.39 delivered sounds like fun:

or how about a Hippo for £14.99? (Looks like a small pusher tug to me!)

I used epoxy for the rudder and shaft tubes and then reinforced around it with some P38 just in case there was any flex in the plastic, its still solid after 3 years.
