RNLI Lifeboat/RC gear
« on: September 29, 2007, 11:50:13 am »

Hi everyone,
Am new to this forum and have a couple of builds on the go. The One I would like to get in the pond first is the 1/72 RNLI Lifeboat by Airfix. Am looking for ideas for  the propulsion system and rudder/servos required. I did say I was newbie didn't I.
Have sealed the hull and pluged the bowthruster and rudder  holes with blutack and she floats fine, I am thinking not to bother with a bow thruster, as this is my first rc attempt and they look kind of pricy, I will probably just fill and smooth their holes over.
So if anyone could help it would be appreciated.

Have a word with Dave Milbourn of ACTion for the small pico ESC, motors, small servo, Hitec feather RX. He produces the small electronics that go in to the modelslipway range of 1/72 models. For power have a word with John Poll of modelpower.  O0

Have a look in the traders directory for the web addresses.

Have a look here for some ideas  http://www.mikromodell.de/index_e.html

Hope this helps

Before getting too far in I would do a test float of the hull to see just what it can carry as I suspect it will be a bit near the limits.  It would probably wind up being loaded a bit deep with RC and batteries, but it saves a lot of wasted effort being sure that it will float upright.

Looking at what can be fitted in to a plastic fantasic, thats why I posted the website. In 2004 when I visited Ellesmere Port show there was the pool for the small plastic kits. So if a little bit of research is done I can not see why it can not be done.

weight is going to be the main problem, the motors I was going to use where from servos and run it like a tank and not fit a rudder servo, the next problem with that is using 2 esc the micro ones from Mtronics adds more weight, then batteries I was thinking of using a Lipo as they are very light and a 4.8 volts are not expensive.

I've got got ACTion looking into designing a solution to the weight problem and the servo mechanism has been causing me concern as well. have you built the airfix kit and put her in the water?

You can strip a servo and use this for motive power and speed control, there used to be a description on the deans Website.

Not sure if this helps but here is my thread on how i converted my Impact baby severn

Stripped down servos woud be the best idea i think and run the whole set-up on 4.8v aaa battery pack

I saw the thread Jay, thanks for that good ideas for my running gear layout, too bad you didn't have a go at the Airfix kit, quite fun, expletive deletd, but this is my start in rc boats and first build since I was a young canuck in a frozen wasteland. So, I think I'll stay with the dealers I have been liasing with at Warwick.
Cheers,
Robert
