Tug Fiede Peba kits - the summer project
« on: July 08, 2019, 09:07:13 pm »

I've always wanted to make a mini/micro rc boat. So far my builds have been limited by 'standard rc equipment and suitable kits.
Accidentally I stumped over the Peba kits available on the German hobby-lobby site. I actually bought two kits: the Mooring tug I in 1:32 and the harbour tug Fiede in 1:50.

The webshop is not modern, and you have to make a money transfer using your bank account, but the staff is very friendly and relyable. By mistake I transferred 1 € to much. Hence this the package included a handwritten note concerning the extra euro and a 1 € coin. Both kits include 3D printed hulls in very good quality. The kits include 'everything' except paint, glue and rc equipment. The only disappointment was the motor supplied with the Fiede kit. A main concern regarding micro models has been the needed rc gear. You can easily source micro rx units using google, but finding corresponding transmitters seems like a mystery when you are a newbie like me in this area of modelboating.

To be on the safe side I found another German website offering:
'Complete set BASIC PLUS, 2.4 GHz for 1:87 trucks'. This set has a rx/tx with esc meant to fit a small 1:87 truck. I asume it will also fit in the tug Fiede.

The link in poet 1 doesn't work for me. Try this one:

This is small. Watching

Thx. for correcting the link, I dont know what went wrong. Hope the next one's are better. With regards to the HEIN tug it appears to be available for orders as of now. I actually ordered one myself although 3 tugs in a row has a very low WAF factor. Seems like an interesting kit that might call for a V-tail mixer.

The sterntube
The sterntube ø3mm is a tight fit in the tunnel in the  printed hull.
However a tight fit is of course to be preferred for a loose fit.
The tunnel had to be expanded with a 3 mm drill.

As stated before the motor is a noname 130 size motor.
The rpm of this motor could be anything from 5000 to 18000 rpm.
Your guess is as good as mine.

This 130 motor is rated at 6v 3000 rpm which should be suitable.

The kit also come with a small steering servo with a standard Futaba plug. The 'rc kit Basic Plus' that I aquired, comes with an even smaller servo, that has a plug that fits with the supplied micro rx. I expect to use the Basic Plus servo - 'Rohs'.

The motor connection to the drive shaft is a very tight fit, and I removed a small part of the motor support to avoid stress in the driveline.

The propeller blades were soft soldered to the propeller bushing. There is a tiny umbraco 'bolt' fastening the propeller unit to the driveline shaft.

The rudder shaft did not have the correct angle to 'hit the hole' in the rudder support. To fix this I made the hole for the rudder bushing a little bigger and glued the bushing while the rudder shaft was is the correct position in the rudder support.

Paintwork in progress and the rudder alignment seems fine.

My "Tug HEIN" is now en-route so looking forward to starting - Trip to the Sports and Model Shop Dingwall planned for the weekend - just for the essentials ;)

Quick question - what type of paints did you use.

ALL 3D printed parts was sprayed with an acrylic filler/primer from Motip.

https://www.thansen.dk/bil/olie-og-kemi/spraymaling/grundmaling/filler-primer-400-ml.-spray-acryl/n1226681274/pn1226681406/?gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAjwscDpBRBnEiwAnQ0HQP9ongcWPXhMqpAvDPK8GO8IBXeQwDimAOncA3QZhPhMzi4RdTsWTxoCx1kQAvD_BwE

After the primer I used an acrylic spray from the same company for the blue parts. The rest was brush painted with acrylic paint from Revell and LifeColor.

Good luck with Hein, hope to see some pictures.

Looks like it’s to be a brilliantly finished model :-))

Edit:
Was going to ask about the propeller blades not being shaped but can now see in your last picture they have been made into aerofoil profiles. :-))

Have they? Look pretty straight to me just given pitch to throw the water as the prop turns. At this size does it make a difference if the blades are not aerofoil shaped or that the pitch increases the further you go from the hub? I suspect not.

I love it that they give you a kit to make the prop. That is really old school.

Enjoying the build. Looks great.  :-)) O0 :-))

I’m in sleepy mode at the moment- it was the closest thing to say other than bent blades! :D
