The annual International Model Boat Show, was sure to please last weekend at Warwickshire Event Centre.

The event hosted thousands of visitors, treating them to an extensive display of the wonders that marine modelling can offer. The incredible variety of models, from early warships to modern power boats and ships, was only magnified by the beauty of seeing them on the water with a large indoor pool available for those feeling brave enough to take to the helm!

Over 600 models from a variety of clubs and societies, were in attendance, with their makers at hand eager to answer any questions. Such was the high calibre of impressive models on show, it must have been very hard to judge which club was going to be taking home the sought-after Society Shield. In the end it was Worcester Model Boat Club who managed to net the 1st prize trophy!

In second place was Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club and in 3rd place was the Lifeboat Enthusiasts’ Society.

It was spectacular to see sparks of inspiration twinkling away in the eyes of so many, across all generations. After seeing the static models, visitors came together around the pool to view, and join in with, the live action.

The event offered more than a fun day out too, specialist suppliers were present to provide visitors with everything they could need for their own builds.

Don’t miss out, make a note of next years dates now! The International Model Boat Show 2020 will be held on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th November at the Warwickshire Event Centre.

Can’t wait till then? The next major event for marine modellers is the London Model Engineering Exhibition which takes place at Alexandra Palace from the 17th to 19th January 2020. The exhibition showcases a vast range of models from across the spectrum including marine vessels.

See www.londonmodelengineering.co.uk for further details.

No indication of whether footfall was up or down or whether the two day format was a success but at least they seem committed to next year. Could do with more traders though.

Hi Colin .
I to was intrested in that so I was watching the croud . I think Sat was down a bit. Sun deffently down and of course no Friday. So over all down a lot.

As for traders . Have a look at this 2012 You tube. from 39 sec to 49 sec. You can see lots of traders in the Lower hall and some are off camera, under the restraunt. In 2019 there was 1 trader in the lower hall and he only sold RC trucks so dosnt really count.
Also in the Upper hall traders were down by several.
Sorry to say but the orginers of this show had better come with some thing in realation to traders or this show will die and be no more.

I think you need to take into account the weather as well which was pretty foul. My trip up was OK but constant heavy rain all the way back including a 1 hour stop due to an accident on the M40 followed by a nightmare drive around 25% of the M25. And I probably had it easy compared with anyone coming down from the North and the dreadful conditions up there. That must have impacted on numbers.

I agree trade support was disappointing, there seem to be several reasons, people have been retiring, a couple of big names now run their own events and it is still difficult to cover costs from sales.

It is obviously becoming difficult to stage a viable dedicated model boat show on a purely commercial basis so maybe the next step is to merge with the model engineering shows. There are some indications that this may be happening at Alexandra Palace for example.

If the traders are no longer trading and no replacements, then there is not a lot they can do in that sense, clubs are suffering as well.

It is a shame but what can they do except as Colin has mentioned team up with other events.

There are still quite a few traders out there, they just choose not to display at shows.

I feel saddened penning this comment, but it needs airing !
Having thoroughly enjoyed attending the annual Warwick show since it began many years ago,
and exhibiting myself on my clubs 'best in show 3 years on the trot' - KLMBC stand,
I feel I speak for many modellers who see the writing on the wall regarding Warwick shows future.

Talking to traders, club members and general show punters over many years,
one factor constantly rears its ugly head - RIDICULOUS FEES CHARGED TO TRADERS !

Put simply -
Punters attend the show to purchase kits and building materials etc - all bought from traders.

Traders numbers are falling at Warwick - mainly due to high fees charged !
(yes, granted a recent retirement - but big names forced to run their own events !! - we all know why).

No traders = NO punters = NO SHOW - it's not rocket science - wake up Meridienne.

Ok a few have gone . That dosnt come close to the 50% to 60% drop in traders since this show at its highest.
But the Bluk are still out there trading , There is a lot they can be done.  Number ONE IS STAND COST . Speak to the traders who are not there but still trading and ask them see what they say?
It is up to the orginser to prove to traders its worth there while trading at that show. Yet year after year we see less traders. Yet at other model shows we see traders who have droped out of the International model boat show trading . Why better terms .

Obviously the show is a commercial event, otherwise it wouldn't be held. It isn't 'not for profit' like Blackpool.

But assuming that the profit margin at Warwick is 'reasonable' and, no I have no idea what that level might be, how would people feel about paying say a couple of pounds more for entry to allow rates to traders to be cut? Again, I have no idea whether that would 'rebalance' the show but Meridienne won't run it at a loss and you can't expect them to.

Overall it is a pretty good event, centrally situated in England (sorry Wales, Scotland etc.) and it would be a great shame to see it go. As things stand you can see lots of great models, buy stuff and meet up with people you rarely see or only communicate with on the Forums plus there is the steak & kidney pie of course. That's all got to be worth something hasn't it?

I find the number of members on the forum saying that the numbers of visitors were down very odd- I watched the main entrance on the Saturday and Sunday mornings to see what the results of the switch to two days would have on them and I thought the numbers (especially on the Saturday) were up compared to the three days. The amount of visitors on the Saturday morning queuing outside was certainly up on previous years with the queue into the car park. And when the doors did open the flow of traffic didn’t slow down until after a good 20 minutes.
I seriously thought the footfall was higher than others are saying as I could barely move around my stand and didn’t have a chance to get to the cafe until 2pm! One other point I’d like to make was that there were still a lot of visitors still in the hall when it closed at 5pm which is something I have never seen at this show.
As Colin pointed out that the weather didn’t help and I was told that people had to be turned away from the car park due to the muddy conditions and that it was full in its current condition.

However I do agree that the number of traders does need to be addressed and fingers crossed the organisers will try to correct this at future shows, I’m sure that traders would return if a deal was to be had but this is entirely up to Meridenne and not for us to say how it would be negotiated.
I enjoy this show a lot as it is in a relatively central location allowing many clubs to attend and would be very upset to see it disappear. So please criticise but be constructive as endless criticism which serves just to undermine a show won’t help us as a hobby

And to answer Colin from an earlier post he made- yes, I hope to have Invincible to be finished completely by Warwick next year.

Thank you gentlemen for the comments, 'the elephant in the room' is now exposed and hopefully something may happen,
no-one wants to see our great annual event disappear with so much in its favour.

A thought to bounce around if I may - Meridienne successfully merged the trucks and vehicles section into the show,
I'm guessing to help bolster interest and therefore coffers.
What about another branch of the hobby? possibly aircraft or a sub division of model aircraft - the obvious indoor flying.
(no shortage of traders, products cross over into the boat world, SLEC and Component Shop already attend major model aircraft shows).

When the Model Engineering exhibition event is staged, the exhibition hall transforms into a huge light airy space,
with the addition of a giant cream marquee tacked onto the left hand side of the building,
stretching from the entrance/ticket area down to the restaurant steps -
walls are removed and the hall spills into a lovely light space, complete with extra catering outfits etc,
ideal for indoor aircraft flying and lots of space for extra stands.

If something along the lines of this may save the show - why not !
I've focused on indoor flying because of similar skill levels involved, static displays similar to our boats could be staged,
with the added bonus of the amazing spectacle of flying museum quality models,
or could we add more boat club stands ?? - blue touch paper lit, retires to a safe distance.  Zippy

Scale "museum quality" indoor model flying is very specialist, normally held in very large venues and only practiced by the few. Most radio control indoor flying is of simple foam type models that are easily mended after mid air collisions and meeting the very hard concrete floors + small helicopters. It could be done on a demonstration basis but I doubt that you would attract large numbers. Free flight indoor models require even more space.

The admittedly much smaller Midhurst Modellers Exhibition in Sussex successfully combines model boats and model trains 40&/40% with the remaining 20% devoted to miscellaneous modelling. Personally I always like looking at model railways and have zero interest in model trucks etc.

However the Internationa N Gauge show is already held in September at Warwick and no doubt the railway people have their own schedule of shows. I have no idea what the attendance profile of railway modellers is these days, obviously trains are more popular than boats overall.

No need to be concerned about the number of model boaters attending a model boat show. There'll be a huge influx as the model aircraft chaps get fed up with all their registration shenanigans for all their models and model boats become the next best option.
I was going to venture into a craft over 250grams, but the recently introduced restrictions have completely put me off the project.

This is a lot of fuss about very little. A £9 fee and a very simple internet multiple choice test that only demands you know what responsible flyers have always done anyway is not really an issue. If it puts anyone off it will only be the non committed flyers who might become non committed boaters. These are not your scale model show visitors.

You don't register your models as I understand it but rather you just have to have your flyer number on the model somewhere so that you can be identified from the model.

Legally a model flyer has always been the pilot in command. This changes nothing.

Like a lot of shows in the UK, this show will never recover with the current organisers attitude to modellers and the traders! , I am not sure if it is the owners or the people working for them , but someone is making bad decisions.

Costs as with all shows are too high, yes, but we always made a bit of a profit at the shows , it cost us this year for the midlands about 1300 pounds and the boat show 650 pounds , plus the 1200 fuel, 500 for hotels for the 2 shows, its very high costs plus the time it takes to get ready and get to it ( even from the UK )

We booked and paid for the last 2 events at the foss way,However.....

On the way to the first of the 2 `the midlands` we broke down ( brand new lorry ) ,but its a long drive for untested lorry... , 3000 kms or more from Bulgaria , when it broke down ( the third axle control system ( whatever it exactly is! ) in some way conked out and brakes came on and it stopped!) a temporary repair was made by the Scania dealer in Romania and we continued...., the lorry then broke down again and was unrepairable at the time due to lack of parts in ( I think ) Belgium , ADAC recovered it to the main dealer in Holland!

Thursday morning before the show when I got the laptop charged again I sent a message to the organisers ( after 12 hours waiting for recovery ) saying I would not be at the show
Wednesday the next week after the show I got a stroppy message of the arrogant young girl who sells the stands saying how annoyed she was that we had messed up there show by leaving a stand empty,
......no mention of `did you get back ok...or anything like that!, no concern at all just `telling me off like a naughty child`` and to be honest anyone who does that gets nowhere especially when I have over the years paid them over 50 grand for stands at the shows they run.

So I decided to not go to the model boat show, being another 3000 mile drive , I decided to stay in Bulgaria

The show has been failing for years with numbers seem to be dropping since modellers were given less club tickets for display stands, traders treated like rubbish and spoken to like idiots by the staff working for the organisers ( the owners have themselves always been `ok` )

Last year it was even worse parking due to the absurd car park with the gym or what ever it is, now also causes chaos with setup,

Reducing the show to 2 days when Friday was the busy day is absurd!

The show can not continue the way it is being run, they need to take a long look at it and change something!
