1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
« on: August 04, 2019, 11:51:29 AM »

Good Morning Gents,

Just picked up my new project from John Wills of Scale Warship,  as he is now producing a 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke hull.

John has supplied me his very first out of the mould.

I don't plan on starting it until the boss has had her holiday, just so I can keep in her good books.

I would be interested in feed back as to would this build log will be of interest?

Thanks Gents for nice comments, will most probably be doing it as USS Ross which is Flight I that has been updated. So I'll be making her post 2016 upgrades.

My plan is to make all the fittings, also to look in to the black arts of doing photos etching.

I'm still not a fan of 3D printing, ha ho one day my view may change.

Home photo etching is possible but messy. I've used a company in the link below to do the photo etch from my designs. They charge 20-30 set up depending on size and the cost of the metal for each sheet produced plus VAT, with a 7-10 day turnaround time . They keep the tooling on file for 5 years so additional copies can be ordered.

Well I said I would not start this build until October , but I've been looking over the drawings.
I've now decided to make the model as USS Roosevelt (DDG-80). This is a Flight IIA which means I need to build a hangar. I've also been planning , access opening, working functions, power layout, sound system and wiring.

I will be using two 6volt SLA Battery's port and starboard power loops. For distribution board I have one of Scale warship units, a long with their servo gun control and a 8 channel switching unit.

Motors will be 550's. Also in my may be useful later store,  I found I had two Revell 1/100 kits of Sea Hawk helicopters.

I've just been looking at a number of photos of this vessel and, Wow, there's loads of equipment on there to be modelled , depending on how detailed you intend this model to be.
Hope your build goes according to your planning.

Ray.

Hi Ray,
You're correct there is a lot of details , I will be trying to make my model as accurate as I can. One area where I've always liked , is where other modellers have done super detailing inside of Hangars. This will be one of my challenges to get right.

I always get excited for an Arleigh Burke build, they make fantastic models in both 1:96 and 1:72. I am just finishing up my 1:72 Churchill so hopefully have her on the water soon weather and work permitting.

Little bit of progress, started on the shaft, stern tubes bearings and " A " bearings. The 1/96 drawing show these shafts to 14mm dia stern tubes and 8 mm dia shafts. Massive, I've taken a bit of modellers licence and reduce the tubes to 11mm and shafts to 6mm 316 s/s, but they still look massive.

The shafts are 495mm in length, this will put the motors under a section of the super structure that will be removable to allow access.

Making use of spare servo horns for the rudders. I've machined some 4mm brass nuts so they fit in the spline part .

No, don't like that!! How are you going to attach the ex-servo horns to the brass? I have little faith in most mechanical fixes to this sort of plastic, and you don't want a failure when everything is buried below the decks..although I would not be surprised if there is an ingenious fix approaching!!

Alan,
Rudder post shaft has a 4mm thread cut in to it and a second nut will be used to lock the horn. As for access the flight deck will be removable. I don't like making models that I can't having access to rudders and therefore I always design the model to give good access in these areas. But in XXXX years of modelling I've never had a rudder control failure.
