Hi Stan,  I am about to start this same kit having recently abandoned the Riva due to weight issues.  Unfortunately with that kit I just didn't realise how overweight Amati kits were until I was to far into the build to put it right.  I just wondered if you had a target all up weight for your GB?  My guesstimate based on a quick flotation test of the hull + 2Kgs of sugar is about 3.5Kgs.  Right now, before I start Dremmel surgery the hull alone weighs just over 1.7Kgs.

I am also thinking of replacing the MDF and ply (particularly any ply which is then veneer covered) with balsa.  Obviously the balsa will need to be well sealed but as far as I can see the MDF is used to provide a framework and there just doesn't need to be so mush strength built in.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.....

Cheers

Just slowly making a start  the dinghy now looks like Swiss cheese. I have drilled a series of 7mm holes in the underside to make it lighter more on this later.

HI managed to install and wire up the Action quad switch today and terminate the cables at a six way plug. These cables will take power to all the electrical functions pictures to follow.

Pictures showing the Action quad switch and the cables attached to the six pin plug. These cables will power all the lighting fitted to the model and also take power to a second switcher unit.

Morning Stan

Looking good...  Re the mast, can you make a slot up say the back of the mast using small sawblade maybe then put the wires in, and then fill or put a slice of same wood in..?

Best regards
David.

HI Dave this may be the only way I can do this. Once the cables are in a good quality wood filler may be the answer to make good the area. Pictures to follow.

Stan, there is standing and running rigging to the top of the mast, could this be your solution to getting power to the masthead light?

HI Spinney. I have made a channel in the wood to fit the copper cables I will post pictures of this later. In the mean time just a few pictures showing the radar support bracket. I have binned the 2 mm copper tube and made the bracket from 1mm brass rod. Other pictures show the yard arms on the mast these are going to be binned and made from ply. Finally just a few items to give more detail to the model.

I asked a question a few weeks ago about fitting wiring down a wood mast. Just a few pictures showing how I fitted the copper wires.  Finally a few pictures of the inside table showing some detail including beer mats and the flower pot.

The work on fitting the cables is now finished and the cut out areas filled and sanded smooth. The boom will be made next and a few fittings need to be fixed the in to the paint shop. The fly bridge is almost complete crew figures need painting and fitting. Just a few pictures showing the copper wire in the mast eight cables in total and some of the fly bridge spot the chocs .

Thank you Mark for your comments. The mast is now complete just a few fittings to fit on the boom. I have tested all the mast lights after filling in the cables all working fine pictures to follow.

Just a few shots of the mast and boom. All the work is finished next step paint shop then fix to the fly bridge and wire up the lights. One shot looking at the internal table with the bench seat behind. Forgot to mention ash in ash tray just needs the cigarette to finish it off

The mast and boom are primed with white primer. Pictures will follow when the mast is ready to be fitted.

The sanitizer bottle was a super relevant touch and will jog the future observer's memories of this horrid year.

To answer a previous member's suggestion about using copper cored cables/wires as rigging, it might work harden and then snap creating a bad connection. It can be used in non stress areas to actually recreate conduit runs painted as metal or plastic tube.
