Milford Star - Have Caldercraft’s improved the instructions?
« on: September 16, 2019, 10:07:59 am »

My Father who is 88 has bought me Caldercraft’s Milford Star for my 62nd birthday.  I collect it later today, although the birthday isn’t until 21st October.  Lucky me.  I have been reading some of the build threads and an slightly apprehensive, the build threads are from 2008/2009, I am hoping Caldercraft’s have improved things.  Any advice on this forthcoming project gratefully received, I am not entirely a novice but I have only built one or two boats previously, a Billings trawler, which my Dad finished and recently Mountfleet’s River Queen.  I am looking forward to the challenge, and when I work out how to resize photographs on an iPad will post photographs.  Thanks in advance for all the help I am sure I will need.

I'll be following this with interest, as I recently bought a Milford Star but haven't looked inside the box yet!

(If you'll be 62 in October you're about 6 weeks older than I am!)

Dave_S, I will post later and let you know my first impressions.  I work full time in retail so it will be a slow build.  Monday’s are my day off, but working every other weekend sucks.

I've also got this kit in the shed awaiting build..... though its got a large hole in the hull which needs repairing and blending in with the rest of the platework.
I built the  Caldercraft S.S.Talacre a couple of years ago and this was pretty straight forward and came out well once I'd put the steering deck and house the right way round..... I believe this is a debatable error in this particular kit. Looks nice on the water, though perhaps a little small once its out there chugging away, so I expect the Milford to be much the same when completed
I've also seen, somewhere, a build log on the Milford Star which does show a few minor problems with accuracy when positioning certain components .... that log may be on here somewhere.

Other than that enjoy the build !

Regards

Not debatable I'm afraid unless the bridge was rebuilt at some point.

Well, still no scale drawings, which will be interesting.  The kit looks well formed though and I think the decks and bulkheads look as if they may be pre-cut so you only have a little to cut through. I haven’t delved deeper into the box but will keep you informed when I do.  I am considering getting a Graupner smoke system but they are expensive.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to start for a couple of weeks due to work and not having the engine yet.  I have a few days off at the beginning of October to make a start.  Can’t wait.

My Milford Star also sits in a cupboard waiting to be started. Prompted by this thread, I started to read the instruction book, got onto page 2 and oh dear, the book does not appear to have been proof read.
Quote 'measure from the stern at the front of the hull'  %%
Obvious to me it means measure from the stem but this might not be so obvious to a first time builder.
I shall have to read it all when the time comes to get the model started.
... To be fair to the originator of the kit though, the beginning of the instructions does say 'read these instructions thoroughly before commencing the build'.

Anyway, good luck with your build when it starts  :-)

Could be a typo for stem %)

Yep, that's what I thought Ned (as above)
I must admit I had to read the sentence a couple of times.  :-)
