Mowe 2 hull sheeting
« on: August 15, 2019, 02:14:27 pm »

I am an absolute beginner and have ought a Mowe 2 kit as my first project.
The thin sheeting to be used on the hull has a cloth lining stuck to it.
Should this cloth be removed before attaching the sheets or left on?
If it is left on will it adversely effect the finish of the model?
Sorry if this is a really basic question but it has me completely stummped!

Made one of these with my grandson last year, great little boat and brilliant kit. The cloth is there to reinforce the very thin ply and should be left in place. Cloth inside ply outside, it glues fine and the finish is not adversely affected as the cloth is internal.

My build notes can be found here if they help https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,61440.0.html

Good luck

I've got the same kit, bought a few months ago. The cloth-backed sheeting was quite badly warped, so bad that some of it had split.

I tried to remove the cloth by soaking, and it curled so badly that I ended up with a 25mm diameter tube.  One side is effectively waterproofed by the glue used to attach the cloth, so the plain side expands, the cloth side doesn't. The parts will be used as templates to cut new sheeting.

If your sheeting is flat enough to use, make sure that you waterproof everything after assembly. I dread to think what would happen if it got damp after being built.

Thanks for the warning, my sheets are also warped but I am going to try fitting them anyway. It sounds as if I should take templates from them beforehand just in case! Thanks.

I built one a few weeks ago, nice kit but i did have a little bit of timber warp and it made life a bit hard but once i got the hull in one piece it was all good.
