Hi shipmate, on the boats I have built that needed a bow thruster I wired through a esc not an
On/ off switch . Most thrusters I have used run at 7.2 max.
Full power at the flick of a switch would probably spin the shaft in the thrust paddle.
There are thrusters that use props which may be o/k for instant full power but I would
Still use a speed controller.
Someone may correct me but that's how I wire mine.

The left & right can be achieved by using a Y lead from the RX rudder channel to the rudder
Servo and the bow thruster esc. Then when you operate the rudder stick the thruster will work.
Every time you use the rudder stick.
I always put mine on a separate channel.

Hey Dave,

Which ACTion / Component Shop mixer is best suited to this application?

I agree with John in that a sudden application of full power to the thruster from a switcher would place a helluva strain on the internal paddle. I'd also not recommend running it from the rudder channel as the thruster motor would be running all the time, whether or not it's needed. There are also times when you might wish to apply the bow thruster in the opposite sense to the rudder e.g. when crabbing sideways for docking. I've always recommended using the 'spare' side-to-side stick on the transmitter for the thruster.

A mixer isn't the gizmo you need - just a plain ESC like the P79, which will provide equal power in either direction and will run all 7.2v Speed 400-equipped thrusters. If you want to run the whole model on a 12v system then you could opt for a P93 for the thruster and run it in its 50% ESC mode. This will supply an average 6v to the thruster.
There's more info on the Component-Shop website here https://www.componentshop.co.uk/action-electronics/esc.html
