Permagrit Flexible Files to make a Drum Sander
« on: June 27, 2019, 11:15:54 am »

I have been looking at the flexible files that are sold by Permagrit.
https://www.permagrit.com/fxt103/

Has anybody used them to make a drum sander? I calculate that I could make a drum up to around 80mm (3+")  allowing for the bit that slots into the drum.

They sell rotary bits, not as large as that mind. I would say what you're describing would be tricky but not impossible, but may make for an unsafe tool, bearing in mind there will be a join somewhere, and what may occur if that came unstuck, and thus could end up with a sharp thin implement flying off. The sheet whilst slightly flexible, is much stiffer than say sandpaper

I was envisaging a slot in the drum to take (& protect) the ends of the file (which I understand can be easily bent) and 2 sided tape (or epoxy?) to hold the file to the drum for the full circumference . Given the relatively slow rotational speed at which filing would take place using my pillar drill I don't think that it would be dangerous.

I have seen the rotary bits but they are so small I doubt my ability to get a nice smooth edge on a longer length of edge.

Okay. I'm not sure how well the coating will take to being bent a full ninety degrees, the people on the Permagrit stand are usually knowledgeable and should be able to advise if you explain to them what your intentions are. No doubt they'll advise safety too. You can use epoxy, tape or contact adhesive to hold the shim in place.

This (at 2:30 on) suggests that they are quite flexible

just ned to cut a bobbin and glue in both edges.
we had similar things to this 40 years ago... just used sandpaper instead of thicker material..

I did ask Permagrit and was told that it is quite a common thing to do.
