Deck Bonding
« on: August 21, 2019, 12:11:24 am »

Ok silly question %)

What glue can I use to bond the deck and hull together on my Pollux 2. Something that will give me enough time to glue all surfaces before the glue dries? I am looking for something that will give me enough time to get all around the deck, or is there another way?

Thanks
Alan

The 30min epoxy resin(duel syringe) is what I used on my Pollux 1 - and that was about 15 years ago  :o ... and it's still solid now, so that's what I would use. The duel syringe ensures equal ratio of the resin and hardner  O0

Hi Capt Podge, are you saying you used the dual syringe directly to the joint?  I never thought of doing that, always squirted first and then mixed it and applied it.

Sorry if I've misled you - but no, you have to mix it on a clean surface (I use a piece of smooth scrap ply) the idea of the dual tubes is that, when you squeeze the plunger you get equal quantities of resin and hardner. This you then mix to a consistent colour (sort of a pale off-white) using a spatula of some sort.
It can then be applied to the joints...
I use the 30min stuff to give me time to make any adjustments as required.
Hope this helps.

Ray.

Oops sorry Roy, just read your reply and think I've overstated the response  :embarrassed:
I'll leave it up though in case it's read by anyone who's never used it before  :-))

No problem Alan. There are other epoxy resins out there with different setting times, such as the 5min one but you do have to be quick with that one  :-))

You can get 2 part epoxy or acrylic sets from DIY stores now which have the mixing nozzles -but be aware, they are very fast curing but they have their uses.  Typically non-professional syringes have only 2 mixing nozzles in the pack and you can't mix properly without.  If you squeeze out the leftovers from the tubes and mix with a stick it's more likely the mixing stik will stick as you mix, before you even get it close to the part you're sticking.

If you want to stick with the more regular epoxies like araldite / bison etc.  If you really don't want "toothpaste" tube types you'll pay 1-2GBP more for the priveledge of the syringe and even then you have to watch what you squeeze out as air bubbles in the different tubes come about and you can easiy press harder on one side than the other.
Whatever you do is OK. I just wouldn't recomment the 1.99 or less types.
