Power options?

Hello everyone living in my computer.

This is my first post here but I have built a few plank over frame yachts in the past the latest being a Racing Sparrow RG65.

I have for a number of years hoped to make a model of the MS Angelina Lauro as she appear in 1969 when my mum brought over to New Zealand on her.

I have source plans and will soon start construction on the hull which will be just over 2m long.

My question today, however, is this...


What I would like recommendations from the most august membership is how I should power her. I don't think space will be an issue.

All suggestions of a proper nature welcome. %%

Liners / Ferries don't need much power, many I've seen have 380 / speed400 size motors and 6v / 7.2v / 7.3v batteries.

.... Lets get carlmt to chip in here, he Mr Ferry....!  :-)

From my quick research, this ship was triple screwed.


With a hull of 2m long, I would most likely opt for 3 x Mabucci 555 motors : smooth running.  I would suggest 40mm props would be plenty.


This is the set-up we have for our Norland ferry kit and she is 1.8m long approximately.

Nice looking ship!    I like simple, proven and reliable.  If it were me, I'd be going with the above 3x 555 motors suggestion - I'd be using a lead battery for free ballast too.

Hi Mike
540 rock crawler brush motor 45 turn(35mm) on 7.2 volts(2S lipo) will give 9500 rpm unloaded and would easily turn 40mm props.
Raboesch prop chart( a free PDF download) shows 40mm prop max rpm 8800.

I bought 2 mabuchi 555 motors a couple of years back thinking they were right for my application.  Did a bit of searching, they don't seem to have good write-ups on forms at all.  OK for power drills, not models!  I don't know whether I have good or bad ones.  Too timid to try them now. LoL.

Not had any problems with those in my Norland.


Got a couple in our new Spirit of Free Enterprise too!

It's a lovely looking ship - great lines - and not an unmanageable size - I wonder if it would be worth taking a mould of your finished hull to be able to duplicate it in fibreglass?

If you are using brushed motors then you can use a single esc to control them, however you will need to make sure that it can cope with the total current from 3 motors. May be best to have one esc per motor. If you go to brushless then you must have one esc per motor.You will find that the two outer props will generally turn in opposite directions. ( If you search on the forum you will find lots of discussion on whwther they should be outward or inward turning.)As for penguins I believe that one of our forum members is an expert on the topic.

Thanks Jim, I was looking online at the Action units and was wondering if the P40 controller would serve the purpose as it can control 3 motors and has the addition of slowing the motor on the inside of the turn?

The P40 controls the speed controllers, not the motors. It will work with either brushed or brushless speed controllers (one for each motor). If you want a unit which will act as both speed controllers for two motors  and a rudder/motor mixer- with the option of including a third ESC for the centre motor - then have a look at the P94.

If you're using the P94 and three 555 motors then a P79 speed controller would do the job. If you go that way then make sure the acceleration slope of P79 is set to Linear and not Soft-Start.
