Graupner GR 65 Yacht newbie. Can't get in!
« on: August 31, 2019, 11:08:42 pm »

Just bought my first RC yacht. Might be a stupid question but how do I get in to install the receiver etc? There is a clear cover over the sail servo and also the rudder servo, these appear to be stuck down with a black adhesive trim. Do I just peel this off and then glue it back on?
The badly translated instructions don't mention this at all. I've done a fair bit of model making over the years but not on yachts.
Any help would be much appreciated.
I've attached (I hope!) 2 photos showing these covers.

Yes it should peel off, not sure if it will stick back down though.
I use insulating tape on my hatch,  renew everytime I seal it down and never leave it sealed up in storage !

Thank you Grasshopper,
I'd decided that was the only solution but was reluctant to go ahead without a second opinion!
Both covers came off without any damage. As you suggested insulation tape is probably the easiest fixing to use.
Now to get stuck into attempting a better translation than the one supplied. The English instructions even have one page with 5 photos and text missing that is there in the German copy.
It is headed "Der Mast", I never did German in school but even I can guess what that is all about! %)

Better than any tape maybe the use of patches covering the hatch completely with an 8mm overlap all round to seal to the deck.
I have quickly graduated to Fablon sheet cut to size, this can easily be smoothed to ensure a good seal and discarded after every outing. Much better than any tape for reliability?
As grasshopper says don't leave it sealed, make sure inside hull dries out.
Enjoy.

Thanks Old Man, another good idea. That's what I like about forums, there is always someone with another way of doing things.
I knew that I was keeping those 3 rolls of Fablon in my workshop for something! One white, one black and one clear. Perfect O0
I had a real boat up until last year and I was thinking how it would sound when having it's 4 yearly safety checks carried out if I told the examiner that the hatches were secured with sticky tape! %%

When you cut the Fablon leave a smell tab extra on one end, this can be folded back on itself and used for easy removal avoiding paint scratches whilst trying to grab the seal?

I also found it easier to position the hatch cover on to the Fablon before fitting to the hull?

I tend to use radio box tape on my yachts which our fast electric lads use as it is clear and does no leave any residue on the hull?

You might be surprised by the ease of Fablon?
