Bathroom sealant
« on: August 21, 2019, 09:20:26 am »

Hi all I have suggested the use of the above for holding electric motors in place, all mine for the last 10 years are still in place.  It allows for tiny movement and I also use it to seal prop shaft after epoxying in place.
Last  year I had to have a number plate replacement and this was attached using double sided patches, it fell off.  I went back and he did it again still came off.  In the end I used some old bathroom sealant and it has been there nearly a year now and shows no sign of movement.
It is quite cheap can be transparent and works well.
regards
Roy

I've been using that method for years - so much easier.     I've found a new version - Soudal - it's an automotive sealant that does everything - fills, seals, glues, joins - it's brilliant!   Sticks like S*** to a blanket and glues practically anything to anything!  :-))

Just had a quick look online - quite cheap considering the uses it has - I'll get a tube on my next diy shop visit.

Ray.

Yes, it can be very useful stuff but bear in mind that the silicone rubber types won't take paint. That will not be an issue in most applications but worth bearing in mind.

The double sided patches you can buy in DiY stores are OK up to a point but often tend to fail if the ambient temperature gets up to 30C at which point your pitures can start falling off the walls!

Soudal takes paint, you can sand it and it fills gaps - I wish I'd found this stuff years ago.

Hi plastic, is Soudal white?  I wonder if it is similar to No More Nails?  This appears to be a very strong PVA glue.
I used a tiny amount of NMN to glue 1 : 43 passengers on my ferry and was amazed how strong the bond is.  I think the plastic figures will break first.
I bought the NMN or similar in a Poundshop locally and very impressed.   Same shop has all the glues and small tins of yacht varnish in at the moment.  Renewed my stocks last week.
I find the epoxy needs much longer to set but absolutely solid after 3 or 4 days.

Soudal is a sealant for car body production - the one I have is grey - it's a bit like silicone but it is able to be painted and it's a bit more 'hard' - like painter's mate used for decorating - it doesn't go rock hard like no-nails.

Hi Plastic, sounds like Screwfix may be best at £6.49 in stock and white.  Ebay looks like £9 with postage.

Yep, used it to seat motors, lead sheet ballast etc. When you want to remove anything held in place with it, get some  dental floss, the waxed cord type rather than plastic tape is better, start at one end and floss away.
Be aware if you use bathroom sealant on flat, high gloss or waxed surfaces, it may not hold heavy items. WD40 is supposed to be good at removing any excess on yer fingers only then you have to have a good wash of the hands to get rid of the WD40 smell!
