New and Need Advice
« on: September 06, 2019, 07:09:27 pm »

Hi Guys

Just completed a first build of a 1960 police launch, all wood, from SLEUK. This was a box construction, I think, but I have just bought a Dumas USCG 41'  utility boat. The problem is the instructions are a bit sparyan, to say the least, and it is built from the keel up.

Can anyone suggest a kit which I can build first, something a nice size of around 31" or so. Preferably with clear instructions and images.

Thanks again guys

How about a 34" RAF crash rescue tender https://lesromodels.co.uk/product/aerokits-crash-tender-vosper-raf-34-5-inch/
accompanied by a fittings kit from model slipway, not listed online but available
Welcome to forum  :-)

All slipway models have full instructions but not wooden kits http://www.modelslipway.com

Hi Andy

That's a possibility. My friend has just finished his 42" version.

Thank you

I built the original Aerokits 34" about 1972 but as a 14 year old I never could afford the fittings too. I sold it all back to the model shop to buy a sports moped  %%

I had a Taycol electric motor. A lead acid accumulator with clear case and real hydrochloric acid  {-) . A 2 channel McGregor crystal radio  that all cost many hours of part time jobs  :((   Then no more modelling for many decades.

P.S. forgot to say Nice looking boat you built there

Thank you, not bad for a first attempt. I used to build Airfix kits when I was a teenager, back in the 80's. I built Spitfires and some of the military Napolionic horse cavalry. I wasn't very good and I prefer the boats I make now.

My dad was an engineer and he wanted a boy but got a girl, he used to get me to help him with the car and things. He called me son.

It's thanks to him for my interest in building now.

An interesting Dad  :-)  I built those Airfix models too but around 1970 + -

Actually the Lobster boat I just built would be perfect but Alas is no longer available as a Kit .
You can view via the link in my signature below if interested. Very nice pictures and only 5 or 6 weeks build.

Really hoping a company will resurrect it  30"

That's a lovely boat and so well made, such a shame it's not available anymore, have had a quick look but nothing. Some of their kits may be available from the US.

I've been looking at the Aeronaut Princess, which looks as though it may be ok.  It's 950mm long and the instructions look ok.

What do you think?

Hi Andraste the lobster boat is good build and it sails well. I have included some pictures of Andy's model and mine side by side. You can follow the link to my lobster boat rebuild.  https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,62785.0.html

Nice model Lesley. I've no experience of Aeronaut apart from their quality fittings.
Some help here perhaps

Hi Andy and Stan

Really good job on the renevation, that's really hard to do to bring it back to life. My husband is trying to renevate a Vosper (he's new to model boats too) and is finding it quite difficult.

Thank you for the link to the princess Andy, I think that may be the one.  It should hopefully be easier with the photo link and the instructions.

Thank you both for your help.

Will keep you posted on how everthing goes.

I don't think you will go wrong with an Aeronaut kit I have the Queen and its a real nice model sits well on the water.  I have to confess I did not build it I asked one of our club members to build it for me, he said it was one of the best kits he had built in a long time and it took him about six weeks to build.

Video is of its maiden voyage, picture quality is not the best.
