DEANS MARINE OPEN DAYS HELP
« on: August 28, 2019, 10:31:38 am »

Hi all I am looking ofora bit of help over the open days, Alan Miller can not make the show due to health problems so we have no one to give advice a building demos in the workshop. It will be a shame to not have the advise available to new modellers as this has always been very popular with the new comers to our hobby who come to the show.
If any modellers would like to take up the post for Friday & Saturday, say 12am to 3pm or spread it over a few modellers  to break it up it would be very much appreciated.
As it is a charity event no one gets paid. but the Girls will feed you drinks and snacks while on duty and you get a free meal and drinks on the Saturday evening. Fancy dress optional. Regards Ron Dean

this is nothing that I dont do every Sunday! last week was 2 new members, 2 boats and fit all radio gear, after we found out
a. the 27 meg gear they were sold by a model shop was duff (both sets)
b. batteries were uncharged

fit a new esc to a twin 540 Sanganista, upgrading the 6v battery to a 12v one.
fit new servo to a 1mtr yacht and show owner how to fit battery and rig it.
a quick slurp of tea, no biccies due to weils disease.......then onto talking a new member through all the rules of the club, explaining the differences between the frequencies of radio. taking new club clothing orders, answering questions  about the 2 shows this weekend.....more slurping of tea.......dealing with members of public asking questions.
need I say that I did not get to sail any of the 5 boats I took down, but I did get 3 boats out of the 5 boats sold!
life as a club secretary means you dont sail!!!@

great day.....including the rain!
thanks to Ron for putting this on, and allowing me to take on the role of modelling advice. totally enjoyed it. great to see new and old faces. had a nice chat with Steve Dean, plus a chat with Colin! great service from the cafe girls......bacon and egg sardines. I also got the Dean's Queens a new packet of multi coloured sharpie pens, so good luck guys, they will be on the prowl saturday night!
now Saturday night is always fancy dress, as I cannot be there this year, there was a special visit from the 6ft penguin. pic attached! ps, there might be an appearance at Warwick this year!
there were loads of boats and accessories for sale as well, and I believe there is an auction on saturday afternoon!
good luck with the rest if the weekend, and next year I'm back all weekend. I will also do the modelling  advice all weekend!!

Well I had a great day and a quarter!

Met the penguin... sorry Klunk, or is it Peter now? %)
Met some old friends and some new ones. I felt privileged to have met Dave Wooley, learnt a lot from him over the years via the forum, Model Boats magazine, and recently Facebook.
I enjoyed the three hours I spent trying to build my Seaman tug kit, spent a lot more helping others with their boats and ended it all with slicing the top of my finger off when I demonstrated how to use plastic card sheet! :embarrassed:
Plenty of people to speak to and plenty of items to buy, I went away with five plans (one by John Lambert, four by Norman Ough), a Matchbox kit of a HS125, and some radio gear.
Got to see Carl's latest Ferry, very smart looking, a few of Ron's latest releases, and Bob K's Polyphemus was back up and running. :-))
Looking forward to next year, and I will be staying all three days this time! I promise... 47 Sqn just try to get in my way again! {-)

A big thank you to Ron and his excellent team for a brilliant weekend and here's to the Christmas Open Weekend.

A three hour round trip on Saturday but was well worth it, as always.  Great to see everyone, and especially to re-gloat on Ron K's HMA Agincourt (it will be at least a year before mine in completed). Stuart boat an Agincourt hull so there will be another seven-turreted battleship to look forward to.
Nick's HMS Adamant coming on great.  Someone at our club is building the 1944 HMA Adamant.
The P18 was a really interesting build, and the car ferry was drool-worthy.
Yesterday I got the harbourmaster's permission to replace my HMS Royal Marine (sunk at sea) so now I have the latest Dean's release Vosper Thornicroft 73 ft MTB on order.
Many thanks Ron and all your team for making us all feel so welcome.

I set off from Oxford on Saturday, looking forward to the event, but an hour later was stuck in a lay-by between Northampton and Kettering for four hours waiting for the AA to collect me and my car and take us home again. Second time in a month that's happened, car spent a week with the dealership after the first the first time but they did sweet FA. It's back there now, and they'd better sort it out this time!

Missed out on a good day out, meeting new folk, re-meeting people I knew 25-30 years ago, and missed out on buying the boat I'd arranged to collect there.

I think the last time I went to see Ron Dean was in 1994 or 5.
