Thoughts please on fail safe settings for RC yachts?
« on: September 11, 2019, 12:13:10 pm »

Firstly would this be desirable or effective?   {:-{ {:-{

If chosen would it be neutral rudder and sails to fly or maximum rudder and sails sheeted in?

Or any other settings?

Discuss please.

Thanks.

Hi, never worried about fail safe on a yacht!  The rudder should be neutral as otherwise you will be in trouble.   Yacht will sail almost anywhere with the sails out at about 35 - 40 degrees.

But with no rudder control that will be determined by the wind direction.

Personally just make sure your batteries are OK and forget fail safe.

If you're sailing on a large lake and the rudder defaults to neutral, you could be in for a very long walk! The club I sail with recommends about half rudder (either direction) to keep the boat circling so it can be retrieved, and sails about half way out as well, if the signal fails the winch can try to wind them in too far and burn out.

I have to agree with Dave_S if you are on large water. If you are on smaller water, and you can walk around the lake easily, then rudder to neutral means that it would go to one of the banks in a short time.
Sail settings, again about half way out.
If sails are all of the way in, if the boat goes head to wind and ends up 'in irons', she may not move much anywhere, resulting in a long wait or wading out. If sails are all of the way in, and she takes off on a broad or beam reach, she may fly into the bank resulting in damage.
If sails are all of the way out she may not catch any wind for a while. eventually she may end up on a run when she eventually turns stern to wind and head off on a dead run. Again, she could fly into the bank or, on very windy days, porpoise and take in water.

Hi all, I have to say I do not agree.

I was stuck on a lake 18 months back and cound not understand why the yacht would not come in and I found the rudder was partly over to one side so every time there was some wind it would pick up speed and then sail round into wind into a stalled wind situation.  The yacht does not sail in circles!

In the end I had to get a friend with a line and we walked her back in, caught in the line.

 Roy

Roy is correct. Most yachts are rigged with a little weather helm. Will turn into the wind, go into irons, fall off the wind, pick up speed, and the same again
over and over. My failsafe would be rudder centered
sails right out and the wind will blow it ashore.

No failsafe on any of my yachts.

Mm, home is 3 inter connected lakes total 75 Acres approx through bottlenecks.

Always a rescue boat so not a real issue?

A walkround to retrieve would test the pacemaker, hips and knees.  {-)

Thinking Dave has it for me.

Thanks for your observations.
