What value is this resistor?
« on: September 13, 2019, 04:03:19 pm »

A small resistor has blown on SWMBO hair straighteners (dont ask!). Its a blue body with rings as follows; brown, black, black, black, brown. Anyone tell me what the resistance value is, please?
Thanks.

I would imagine you need to consider resistor wattage rating as well as resistance value...

Ask yourself, 'why has it blown?'
This is a mains appliance presumably
that SWIMBO is holding to her head.
Bin them and buy new I would say.

What he said.  These things are usually designed to be assembled once, but to be disassembled and put back together again.
Looking at https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/tools/resistor-color-code-calculator/ - 100 ohms at 1%, no clues as to wattage.
Worked out as brown=1, black, black =0,0, multiplier (number of zeroes), black=0, brown gives a tolerance rating of 1%
Google is really wonderful sometimes.

The resistor 'blew' because the swivel power connection was unsound causing sparking \ power surges. I fixed this connection so this no longer happened and applied a little conductive grease to it. I eventually worked out the resistor is 100 ohms.
