Harbour Defence ML
« on: September 21, 2019, 05:48:31 pm »

I know the one in Haslar Marina - the only intact survivor - and want to build a model of it.  Sarik offer a styrene hull but as far as I can see, no picture of it.  They also offer a "plan" but when I try to open it all I get is the side view of a tugboat.  I've asked Sarik to advise me but got no clear answer.  So my two questions are:
Is their hull any good?  The real one has heavy timbers all round the gunwhale for example and it would help if they were on the moulding.  Is styrene going to be strong enough?
Has anybody seen the correct drawing to go with this hull - or is there nothing more than a plan and elevation of the completed launch?

I think the Sarik one was originally sold by the Model Boats shop many years ago. If it is, then it’s just a smooth moulding. The keel’s there but nothing else.

It can be made into a nice model, though.

The Sarik entry illustration is inaccurate but the plan and hull are correct.

This is a plan originally drawn by David Metcalf and first issued as a free plan in an early 1984 issue of Model Boats magazine. The plan was reissued (again free) in the February 2010 issue of the magazine together with an illustrated article by Editor Paul Freshney and you can buy the magazine with the plan apparently still in it here:

http://magazineexchange.co.uk/cw/model-boats-magazine-february-2010-issue.html

A styrene hull, the one listed by Sarik was produced to complement the plan for those who did not wish to build the hull.

Paul's own model, which won best of class at the 2007 MPBA National Championships is shown below.

I hope this helps,

Colin

Just to add, the Sarik hull is just a plain moulding with keel, but no other moulded detail , it is however, a very good and extremely sturdy hull. Another one in my workshop that needs starting %)

Hi

I made this model back in the 90's as has been said the hull is smooth but with time it can be made into a very nice model.

I got most of the deck fittings from what is now Battlecraft.

That's all right, Mr Ryan. My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on Playmate of the Month.

Can I add that the plan is very nicely detailed also. With more than enough info to complete the basic construction.

Hi Richardabeattie

I do think I just may have the two magazines from when it was first released, I also may still have the extra plans that I used to help with the detailing for my model.
