Alternatives to Chrome Plating (Electroplating)
« on: September 29, 2019, 07:41:53 pm »

I am scratching my head at the moment trying to think of an alternative to electroplating on a restoration project - any suggestions would be appreciated

Silver paint ?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323898279692
I've never used it, but it has been recommended for a silver finish.

I use Molotow liquid chrome, you need to seal it with Alclad II klear kote as other clear cotes turn it grey.
Works for me every time.

A couple of brass fittings finished with it

All the fittings on my motorboat were finished with it and have so far stood up well.

Looks just the job. Do you spray the Klear Kote on?

another vote for that brand of liquid chrome, used it directly on a 3d printed plastic part, to great effect.

Looks really good. I notice that they do various nib sizes - 1mm 2mm 3mm 4mm 5mm & possibly more.

Any thoughts on what size(es)

Depends on the size of the object you want to detail

I realise that but as I have no idea what the nib size really means I was interested in which sizes someone who has used them found useful.

Nib size is exactly as advertised
So if you want to detail recessed bolt or screw heads you would need the smallest

Be wary of pricing as it varies dramatically from seller to seller

This is one of the better sellers https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Molotow-Marker-703-Liquid-Chrome-1mm-/252776135671?hash=item3adaa1bbf7

and one of the cheekiest

Keep us all updated on how you get on please SJG.
I know for sure I'm going to need something like this too, later in my current build  :-) .

Ray.

Thanks Brian. I'm a little way off needing it on my builds but it's going in my notebook!

This product sounds too good to be true, though, having viewed preceding photos, seeing is believing.
(1) Can it be applied successfully to brass and/or copper rod and tube?
(2) Any experience of how long before the chrome finish deteriorates when exposed to fresh water?

Thanks.

I've no experience with tubing, but have used it on brass fittings with great success. As for durability, as its sealed with a clear cote, I personally have no need to doubt it will last.

many thanks for your responses - unfortunately due to the area involved  I will have to fall back to electroplating.

So looks like I will be learning brush electroplating

This may be of interest, although the process uses Nickle [Ni] as the deposit material

https://www.sifcoasc.com/what-is-brush-plating

The vast majority of bright metal [and plastic] components we see today are Nickle plated and not Chromium plated .....[quite some reading required]

Remember the Moh hardness Scale from high school....Diamond = 10.0 Moh Scale, Talc = 1.0 Moh Scale

The down side of brush plating Nickle is that the material itself [Ni] = 4.0 on the Moh Scale, whereas Chromium [Cr] is 8.5

Yes... <*< more reading............. Derek

Thanks - the engine has parts on the frame which were originally chrome plated and that may be the reason for the high level of corrosion on some of the parts. I am going to have to  and dry it out prior to disassembly - I am guessing it was stored in a very wet environment.

Not sure the seller knew what he was selling - its a different model from the one advertised and earlier. unfortunately this makes disassembly a nightmare. Bonus though - may now have an excuse to buy a sand blasting cabinet.
