Help, ESC for engine Mabuchi RS-550 SH.
« on: March 10, 2020, 04:58:32 pm »

Hi everyone.

I go to start to build my ship. But before I start I want to motorize the ship.

The engine is a Mabuchi RS-550 SH.

This is all information I could find.

https://es.aliexpress.com/item/2036477456.html
Motor voltage : 3-12V
3V Current 0.6A 3179 rpm
6V Current 0.65A 7240 rpm
12V Current 0.8A 14146 rpm

It has a 42mm propeller.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My question is:

1º What electronic speed controller do I need for this engine?
     How many amps?

I want to make it realistic and I want put it position lights, deck lights, radar, winch ...
2º What Lipo 12v battery do you recommend?
     How many amps (mAh)?

Thanks.

What voltage are you intending to run it on and in what type of model, eg tug, coaster, warship, speedboat.

...
It has a 42mm propeller.
Then what you want is a 555 motor driving the prop directly. No gearbox.

Hi Bob.

I would like something like that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBz7Mk3ONFM
Would it be a coaster?

Yes, it has a gearbox.
But I don't know which is.

Can it be 1,5:1 or 1:2?

Can everybody see all the photos in this thread or is it just me that cannot see any?  Other threads seem to be OK for me.

The video shows a Robbe Key Largo sports boat. A fast cruiser.
I would fit a 15 amp ESC and fuse at 10 amps.
Run on 7.2 volts ish to try it.

No - I can't see any of the images either; likewise the You Tube link doesn't work for me.If the model is a Key Largo then I'd agree 100% with Bob - a 2S LiPo pack (7.4v) would be best. A 3S pack (11.1v) would overload the motor with that prop.

The pictures showed after proving to http://imgfz.com that I was not a robot

My recommendation of a direct drive 555 was based upon a ship driving a 42 mm submerged drive scale prop.I would describe that as a fast cruiser, not a ship.
The Mini Kompact looks 2:1 but I think it is for a smaller motor.
Look up the drawing for 400 or 380 motor.

That is an improvement!
I would suggest not exceeding 11.1v as that is going to be pushing the limit of the motor. The gearbox looks like a 1.5:1 unit which will help a bit. The model probably recommended 9.6v NiMhs back in the day, so a little more powerful on an 11.1v pack.
Suggested speed controllers, Mtronics Tio 30, Quicrun 1060 or probably better off with a Quicrun 880, any of the cheap chinese tat that will follow this post ( at your risk of course! ), or any unit good for at least 30 amps at 12v. Car controllers are fine. If you do not want a reverse function ( risky though..) electric flight controllers come in at about half the price of forward and reverse units for cars and boats.

Hi everyone..

I don't know why the double photos look.
(I do not get it)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you very much Bob and unbuiltnautilus for your advice.

I have seen the motor data sheet and it supports up to 12V.
I think I'm going to put in an 11.1V Lipo battery with a current regulator and a stabilizer and a fuse.
And I'll look for a 30A speed controller.

Daniel, those specifications do not give any indications of the current draw of the motor. 540 motors can vary enormously in their current consumption depending on how many windings they have on the armature. The 'no load' consumption can give some indication of this but without knowing the power consumption of the motor you will have no idea of what performance you may get from it or how long the battery might last.

If you look at the 540 type motors data on the Component Shop website you will see that typical current draw and no load current figures are given and they differ a great deal between the standard and high power types.

If using an unknown motor with an unknown prop, and you need to know the best ESC for it, the only way is to do testing and measuring.  Fairly easy with a brushed motor.  Just immerse the prop in a body of water and connect the battery intended.  Measure the current drawn with a meter.  Or connect via a fuse.  Using a pack of assorted fuse values as from a car accessory shop, it is possible to observe what values of fuse blow, and what don't.  You want an ESC that can handle more current than the lowest value that survives.  Probably the Quicrun 1060.
How many mA/H battery?  As many as you can fit.  Lighter batteries tend to not have the same capacity.  Same with physically smaller batteries.  Avoid batteries that claim greatly higher numbers than than others the same size because there is either a typo or a liar involved.
Ex-drill motors are usually cheap because nobody wants them.  Used in a drill, they do a good job.  In a boat, they need a much smaller prop than you think to get the RPM continuously without draining your battery too quickly.
