RMAS Ocean Tug Roysterer
« on: October 02, 2007, 01:42:31 PM »

Via email to Mayhem....
Hi

I came across your site quite a while ago as I was building my scale
model of the RMAS Ocean Tug Roysterer (Which my Dad was Chief engineer on in
the late 80's)
I started building Roysterer in 2000 when I joined HMS Roebuck as
something to do whilst at sea!! I got the basic Hull and Superstructure
moulding from Westward Mouldings LTD at Gunnislake in Cornwall, and lots of
technical and ship info from Dad and memories of my time on board.
I spent 4.5 years on Roebuck and continued building her using all sorts of
odds and ends I could find on board ship (not many model shops in the Gulf)
I left Roebuck and subsequently the RN in 2006 after 22 years and the
Roysterer got neglected for a time, now a full time civvy I got back into
the swing of things and she is just about finished. She has two
independently controlled engines and just need to complete sea trials to be
fully operational.

Any way hope you like the photos and I may have a go at another project .HMS
Norfolk, another old ship of mine that now belongs to Chile as the CNS
ALMIRANTE COCHRANE.!!!

Cheers, Darren

Darren,
One of my old ships too, glad to see you used the 4 blade props on her.

Well done Darren, a lovely model! I hope you have much pleasure sailing her, and good luck with your new boat.

Nice model, never sailed on her although have been on her sisterships. I like the engineer on the bridge wing, that was were you usually found them. If I remember she was the last big seagoing tug manned by RMAS Greenock on the Clyde and was finally based at Faslane, I remember her master George then a real character. Hope to see her on the water soon, she looks Brahma.

I cant remember if it was Rollicker or Roysterer under new owners sunk in the Indian Ocean.
Loss of all hands.

Bob,
It was the Pompey based Rollicker that sank suddenely with all hands in the Pacific, she was owned in Australia at the time. Knowing the poor stability of this class I was not surprised.

Only one detail is missing from a good paint job. That is a dull V shape spreading out from the Bridge wings going down the side, where everyone on watch lost their meals etc down the side, I was one of many who did it. The boats rolled 30 degrees on a mill pond sea and their pitching was out of this world for violent movement.
That is my memory of them, 2 to 3 days living on stugerons (sea sick pills issued by MoD) before I could stand a watch, very few (the lucky ones ) were unaffected by this class.
