What engine can I get away with - ANTEO tug
« on: October 30, 2019, 02:43:00 pm »

I bought the rather dilapidated hull of an unfinished ANTEO tug.
I have repaired the hull and at present scratch building the superstructure.
I was wondering about sticking a steam engine/power unit in it.
Not knowing much about what would be suitable I ask for advice.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
There are budgetary restrictions being a pensioner
Thanks

Hi Roger - there’s no need for a big motor in these tugs as they are scale models that pretty much plod along. One of the MFA geared motors would do nicely with a big prop on it.

Fitting a steam plant is doable but tricky. Click on the link in my signature down below and there’s my take on how to do it. Good luck with your build - Mark

Bonjour Roger,
I fully agree with Mark, this tug does not need a big machine. Based on this example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrKd4jzpl30

I would kindly suggest to keep in mind the idea of a 100 x 160 mm horizontal boiler but with a 3 cc machine which will offer you more than 30 minutes of autonomy.

Again, here is an example of a powerful 3 cc Stepheson JMC machine : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1EdKTdvFKU
