Light bulb moment  O0  I have a large paddling pool and if I am stuck in the workshop (apart from meals and to make sure steamboat apprentice is still binge watching Eastenders  {-) ) a perfect time to do some testing  :-))  Well at least can do the washing up then have sail when he finishes (the boat that is)

Evening! I seem to have reach an impasse at the moment.... but I usually do at this stage, ie. fixing in the motor,
 stuffing tube & skeg... screw this up and it's a big horrible repair!

( NB: I'll probably be using good old Stabilit Express... as log as that hasn't gone hard too! .... £22 a tube now?!? )  :o :o :o :o :o

In the meantime, I've started that card TID Tug build:

A useful tip that I saw somewhere was to wrap the hull in a piece of clingfilm/ plastic bag and then you can do whatever ballasting/ layout/ flotation tests that you want to do before finishing the model. Small models have advantages!

Could you fabricate something to avoid using the plastic part? It looks like a tube so it should not be that difficult. Personally I would also be happier if I had not had to search for an adhesive that might/might not work and where I would have doubts every time I put the model in the water.

Thanks TF,

I'll try Stabilit first, I've not fount any solid material it doesn't adhere too as yet.... even if it doesn't bond completely, it will provide a secure enough fillet that I can then secure with superglue.

Don't forget that seriously abrading the plastic surface where you want the glue to stick never hurt.

Good luck.

OK, Part 9 - 'Faffing about with motor alignment'.

 I usually like to do this by ear, checking for drive line loading when motor press into mount..... it doesn't go well !
  I'm thinking of using a blob of epoxy and letting the motor and mount find it's own alignment.....  {:-{

As you are using a solid coupling have you considered a large blob of silicone sealant to mount the motor? Easy, lets the motor sit how it wants to and you can easily get the motor out if you need to.

I find it easier to ensure low friction by using a very low voltage where I find any difference in load to be much more obvious.

That shaft unit looks like a very tight fit which maybe the reason why the motor won’t lay flat ( the mount maybe off too)

Personally I would widen the shafts hole in the hull slightly (and elongate it) to allow it to be a looser fit, this will give you wiggle room to get the motor mounted better and the shaft aligned centrally to the rudder more accurately, once in place you can glue down the lot permanently with some epoxy to seal.

Just my 2 cents

Yes I was thinking of the Silicon 'blob' option, but doing it with slow set epoxy.... 'cause that's what I have around at the moment!
 ( I have a theory that all glues, silicon etc, all stay fluid until a week before they detect you need them! )

The mount just doesn't seem to be at the right angle up/ down as appose to port / starboard.

Epoxy won't work in the same way, as it lacks the softness of silicone rubber to absorb vibration.

OK, so I've gone with the silicon sealant ....... only trouble is this silicon takes 24 - 72 hours to set.
 Should have checked that beforehand!
 Luckily I did remember the the silicon that smells of vinegar, instantly corrodes any metal near by and I removed the motor etc.

OK, all glues set.... unfortunately, something must have shifted, while clamping I guess....  {:-{

Anyway, not too bad, just a quick bit of fettling with a mini drill ( lower the arf end of the motor ) and alignment regained.  :-)

Martin

The structure of these kits seems very complicated and must make the already limited internal space even smaller. I have also asked this question in the Q3 thread to see if there is any difference

What thickness ply do they use for the Q1 kit?
